Features of human motor memory and ways of its development

Hello! Motor memory is the memorization and reproduction of movements directly. It is the key to skill development. Even something as simple as walking or writing.

I think you are aware that, having learned to ride a bicycle, a person will never forget how it is done. Even if he hasn’t sat down for many years. Hands and feet will do everything.

And today we will take a closer look at what it is.

Features and characteristics

It manifests itself at a fairly early age, when the baby has a need to develop such skills as holding his head, crawling, and so on. These are conditioned reflexes, the development of which occurs due to motor memory.

Its peculiarity is that development is not limited to infancy or early school age. A person masters new and new movements throughout his life. And if he has not mastered something well enough, it is quite possible to fix it by putting a little effort and working out the skill.

We need motor memory in order to optimize our thinking processes, freeing up space for new tasks. And also save time and resources of the body. Suppose, in the absence of a clearly built algorithm of actions, we would be very tired even when doing very simple things.

For example, such as squeezing and unclenching fingers, walking, swimming. Just imagine, you are sitting in an office and you need to go to the toilet. Instead of doing this, thinking about something important, you would think: “Now you need to tighten your legs and back to stand up, now move your left leg, lean on it and put your right one,” and so on.

Exercises

Goal

Tape a piece of paper with the goal drawn on the wall. Place a chair and sit opposite it, drawing a dot in the very center. Then lower your hands to your knees, wait 30 seconds, close your eyes and repeat the steps.

It is important not to peep to get to the same place. The smaller the gap between the set points, the better. This means that you have fairly well-developed motor skills. But that doesn’t mean you can relax.

Take longer breaks, for example, you can test your strength the next day, and not after a certain number of minutes.

Gradually, with such training, the distance between the points will be significantly reduced.

For the sake of interest, you can even arrange competitions with home. Just use colored pencils, otherwise you will get confused.

By the way, you can periodically shake your hand, as if creating “motor interference”. Your accuracy may drop, but you will develop resistance to interference, and soon they will not be a problem for you.

Points are just the simplest example, you can go beyond them and try to depict lines, shapes, and so on.

Change of position

  • Wheels

Stretch your arms forward, imagine that you are holding onto the handles of huge wheels and try to rotate them. Only turn the wheel towards you with your left hand, and vice versa with your right hand. When it starts to turn out well and quickly, change the direction of the hands. Then train to carry out a quick shift — spin to the left, immediately turn to the right.

  • Cam

Stretch your arms forward again. Clench one into a fist, and place the other under it with an open palm and quickly change position.

Recommendations

  • Strive to perfect some movements, repeating them literally a hundred times.
  • Do gymnastics for the hands, in particular, for the hands. Engage in knitting, modeling, drawing in your free time. Or whatever you like and uses your hands to work. Let’s say even woodcarving or baking cookies will do just fine as a gymnastics and workout.
  • Play a game with a person who is also looking to improve their motor memory. It is simple — you take turns showing each other movements that must be exactly repeated. That is, first you, then the partner portrays yours and adds his own. The one who gets lost first and forgets the correct sequence loses.

Why develop motor memory?

In addition to saving time and resources through motor skills, we become able to learn new skills. Suppose even something as simple as writing would be impossible for us.

Studies have shown that in most cases victims of a traffic accident survive thanks to this type of memory. When the car enters — the person does not have time to think carefully about the plan of action, he automatically turns the steering wheel in the right direction. How and when he sees a car speeding along the oncoming lane.

Or, having learned to fall correctly once, or rather, to group for a safer landing, he is unlikely to ever seriously suffer from the fact that there is ice on the road.

Therefore, do not just develop, but also master the skills that are important for you, which, perhaps, will ever be able to save your health or life.
