Why do you need to know the fat content of homemade cottage cheese?
Cottage cheese is very high in calories, so people on a diet cannot eat it. In stores, you can buy this sour milk product with an indication of the percentage of fat on the package. There are 3 main types of cottage cheese on sale:
- fat-free (about 1,8%);
- classic (from 5% to 15%);
- fat (up to 23%).
For each percentage of fat, there are 9 kilocalories. The lightest is the fat-free product. It can be included in the children’s menu and eaten on a diet. But many people do not buy this product, but prefer to cook it on their own from whole milk. In this case, it is more difficult to determine what fat content of homemade cottage cheese is, and it is almost impossible to achieve accurate results. The results will be very approximate, but still give an idea of how fatty the product you have turned out.
How to determine the fat content of cottage cheese?
There are some simple ways to calculate the fat content of curd. In order to use them, you do not need special devices and complex formulas. But you need to know what the fat content of the initial product is milk.
- To determine the percentage of fat in milk, leave it in the refrigerator overnight in a glass. The height of the drink should be 10 cm. In the morning you will find that a yellow streak of cream has separated from the milk. Measure its height with a ruler – 1 mm is 1% fat.
- Knowing the proportion of fat in milk, you can determine how much of it is in the cottage cheese. The calculation is very approximate, but simple. If you make a fermented milk product from 1 liter of milk, the proportion of fat in which is 3%, then at the output you will get 0,5% of cottage cheese, which means that its fat content will be 6%.
- To determine the percentage of fat in homemade cottage cheese, you can use a convenient formula, where:
