Faster heart rate – shorter life

People whose heart rate is constantly accelerating are more prone to premature death – informs the ‘EurekAlert service.

Experts at Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute New York Presbyterian Hospital studied the results of more than 9000 patients. It turned out that the increased heart rate (above 84 beats per minute) during the five-year observation is associated with a significantly increased risk of death – both from heart disease (55% more often) and from other causes (79% more often). . The correct heart rate is 60 to 80 beats per minute.

According to the research leader, Prof. Peter Okin, heart rate measurements repeated over many years can be a simple, cheap and important indicator of health, allowing for the diagnosis and treatment of health problems. Increased heart rate is, among other things, an indicator of increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which is associated with cardiac ischemia and a higher risk of atherosclerosis or arrhythmia.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the slowest resting heart rate was recorded on August 11, 2005 in the British Martin Brady. Such a slow (less than 50 beats per minute) heart rate is Bradycardia, but this professional name comes from Latin, not the name of the record holder. (PAP)
