We criticize fast food for high fat content, sometimes for artificial additives or the quality of products. We know theirs regular consumption can lead to weight gain and many diseases. It turns out there is another very important effect of this ‘pleasure’.
Tim Spector, a British professor, decided to conduct an experiment. The volunteer was fed only McDonald’s food for 10 days. Before, during and after the experiment, samples of his feces were examined. The goal was to test the effect of junk food on bacteria in the digestive system.
During the first days, the respondent felt very well, but he quickly learned about the dire effects of fast food. He was becoming more lethargic and his skin turned gray. The results of the stool tests, however, brought more surprises. The intestinal microbes were devastated. After a few days, the study participant lost an estimated 1400 species of microbes, which is almost 40 percent. whole. These changes lasted up to two weeks after the fast food diet. It is worth mentioning that loss of diversity is a universal signal of poor gut health in obese and diabetic people and causes a number of immune problems (as shown in studies in laboratory mice).
The results are very disturbing. We know very well how the intestinal microflora affects our health and well-being. The awareness that the Western diet can have such a large effect on our body should be a warning signal and induce to change bad habits.
