Fashionable kitchen design: photo
There are no people in our editorial office who are indifferent to tasty and healthy food. Unfortunately, for technical reasons, we cannot arrange a mountain feast for all readers of the magazine. But we will try to compensate for this with a selection of the most current trends in kitchen design.
backlight
The easiest option is countertop lighting. For wall-mounted models, this problem is solved traditionally – due to lamps built into the wall cabinets. With kitchen “islands” everything is much more complicated and interesting. Here, the light source is all sorts of ingenious structures hanging over the work surface like umbrellas (often they are combined with a hood). However, most manufacturers are striving for more than functionality. Hence – all kinds of decorative delights.
For example, illuminated plinths, thanks to which massive floor cabinets seem to float in the air. Or lamps built into cabinets with translucent glass doors – this creates the effect of a theater of shadows. Some brands start up lighting around the perimeter of the work surfaces.

This option will surely appeal to those who like to empty the refrigerator under cover of the night – the risk of bumping into a sharp corner in such a kitchen is minimal. You shouldn’t be limited to one light source: the more lighting options, the more interesting your life in the kitchen will become.
Tree
A few years ago, ebony was the leader of design sympathies. However, there was not enough exotic for everyone – many companies used European breeds tinted under wenge. In the new season – everything is fair. Breeds with an interesting and rich texture are in high demand. The “predatory” pattern of contrasting stripes is especially popular. It is impossible to imitate it: either the material has the required characteristics, or it does not. The news is not limited to this.
Wood is now increasingly used in fragments – as a bright accent. For example, for finishing built-in wardrobes. Sometimes they are varnished, which makes storage systems somewhat similar to the “walls” of Soviet times, but they look, of course, much more elegant.
Wall panels are also popular, which serve as a “backing” for open shelves and wall cabinets. Wood is combined with steel and laminate, glass and varnish. The main thing is that the accompanying material should look modest and not overshadow the natural beauty of the “soloist”.
Лак
Lacquered furniture has been in our living rooms and bedrooms for a long time, so we got used to the glossy sheen of built-in wardrobes, dressers and tables. Nevertheless, the large-scale invasion of the kitchen by varnish has been postponed for a long time. Apparently, the designers were embarrassed by its tendency to become covered with stains from the fingers. However, from a hygienic point of view, this material is not as bad as it seems: it is much easier to keep smooth surfaces clean than, for example, rough wood.
The varnish is also good for its reflective properties. Thanks to this, even dark furniture will never look gloomy.
Do not forget that glossy surfaces look much brighter than matte ones: red lacquered kitchens resemble ripe tomatoes, and yellow ones burn like a hot sun. In general, this is exactly the case when the advantages of the material outweigh its disadvantages. And, judging by the abundance of lacquer kitchens, the manufacturers understood this.
“Islands”
The kitchen “island” has a lot of advantages. This is an additional work surface, a space zoning tool, and a communication center where you can not only cook dinner, but also chat with friends. It seems that the social function interests the designers the most.
The most popular move is to connect the “island” and the bar counter (it, among other things, serves as a shield to help hide the clutter on the work surface). However, other options are also possible. In some models, an additional wing is attached to the “island”, intended for organizing feasts, although, if desired, it can also be used for cutting food. Another interesting option is “islands” with a “cover”. In such kitchens, the “island” is supplemented by a mobile U-shaped structure. In the retracted state, it turns into a bar counter already familiar to us. When retracted, it completely hides the work surface from the eyes.
Classic
There are people who are indifferent to the wonders of modern design – they need a time-tested kitchen. It is for them that traditional style models are made. However, the classics can also be different. Some brands reproduce historical patterns. Most often they are rustic, with indispensable open shelves, sideboards and huge “islands”. Others adapt traditions to the requirements of our time.
If the canonical country kitchen requires space, then its modern version can be quite compact. At the same time, it pleases the eye with recognizable details – paneled doors, hood hoods and glass doors with curtains. The third option is the most pretentious. We are talking about models that are distinguished by an abundance of architectural elements. Their facades are made of solid wood, and their countertops are made of natural stone; sometimes gilding is also used in decoration.
Fitted wardrobes
Our appetites have grown significantly. Tazhin, wok, and cauldron settled next to the usual saucepan and frying pan. Slender rows of jars of homemade jams and pickles have been added to the containers with exotic sauces. To count all the appliances that live in the kitchen, fingers are no longer enough. And how many glasses there should be in a decent house is even scary to imagine!
Conventional kitchen cabinets and cupboards have long ceased to cope with such a load, so they have been replaced by built-in storage systems. The main task of the designers is to prevent these giants from disfiguring the kitchen. It is solved in two directly opposite ways. In the first case, the doors of the built-in wardrobe are made as invisible as possible: as a rule, a varnish is used, chosen to match the color of the walls, there are no handles. In the second, noble wood, gold leaf and other expensive materials are used. Such a surface inevitably becomes the focus of attention. But in any case, what you see in front of you is just a beautiful wall. Only the initiates know about what is hiding behind it.
Dual purpose furniture
Kitchens are overgrown with new elements. We did not have time to get used to the huge storage systems, without which almost no model can do without, when the next “news from the fields” thundered. Some manufacturers have added chests of drawers and shelves to their collections; others have hidden mini-home offices in the depths of their closets.
But the big news is two-way storage systems designed for space zoning. Arranged according to the principle “in front of me, back to the forest,” on the one hand, they are intended for kitchen utensils, and on the other, they represent a bookcase or television cabinet. The brands that produce furniture not only for the kitchen, but also for other areas have gone even further – they offer whole sets, including various kinds of cabinets, dining tables, chairs, etc. When you look at these developments, the question of where everything is going disappears by itself. All these novelties are addressed to fans of combined spaces: furniture of “dual use” is designed to bring the fusion of kitchen and living room to its logical conclusion.
White
Designers are constantly rushing from one extreme to the other: black – white, white – black … Now they have together moved to the light side. Veneer, varnish, solid wood or laminate – there are no restrictions on the choice of material. The main thing is that the facades of the kitchen are absolutely white. To emphasize the virgin purity of the furniture, the walls of the kitchen are painted in bright saturated colors. But the combination “white on white” is also possible; thanks to her, the room will turn out to be very bright (if we take into account the eternal lack of sun in our latitudes, this is a very valuable quality). Choosing a model of white that is relevant this season, you will not go wrong in the long run.
Wherever the pendulum of fashion swings, you can always give the kitchen an up-to-date look with the help of accessories, because white is a wonderful background for decorating experiments.
Stone
Natural stone is famous for its capricious disposition. Marble, for example, is afraid of acids and alkalis, shale does not tolerate abrasives, and granite, for all its hardness, is very fragile and can crack on impact. However, when it comes to beauty, pragmatic considerations recede into the background. Unsurprisingly, stone has always been used extensively for kitchen countertops. Modern designers have gone further. They cover the sides of the kitchen “islands” with it and even make cabinet fronts out of it. But in parallel, another process is going on – in the kitchen, a stone of artificial origin is increasingly found. First of all, all kinds of composite materials (the most famous of them is Corian), which deftly imitate the “appearance” of a natural stone, but are devoid of its drawbacks.
Most often, they are used to make modern kitchen countertops (classics still involve the use of natural materials), but there are no rules without exceptions. In the past couple of years, some traditional-style factories have developed composite countertops interspersed with shimmery particles. They look especially impressive in tandem with handles decorated with Swarovski crystals.
