Winter is in full swing. Frosts came, and the roads and sidewalks were covered with ice and frozen snow. In such conditions, it is easy to fall and injure the wrist, elbow or ankle. How to minimize the effects of such a fall? What should we do when we bruise, dislocate or break a limb?
- In the event of a serious injury as a result of an accident on an icy road, be sure to call an ambulance.
- If you are able to help yourself – start by removing a shoe, watch or ring from the damaged limb
- The damaged place should be properly secured – minimize swelling, prevent contamination of the wound, immobilize the limb

Fall on ice – what to do after a fall?
The key is to get the right help as soon as possible. If a fall breaks your leg or causes any other more serious injury, call an ambulance service (999 or 112). While you wait for your arrival, and when rescuers do not need help, try to minimize the consequences of the fall by yourself or with someone else’s help.
If possible, take your shoe off your damaged leg or at least loosen your laces. Once the leg begins to swell, it will be difficult to release it. The same should be done in the event of a hand injury – remove the watch and jewelry.
Cold compresses can be used to relieve pain and swelling. However, remember not to put ice directly on the skin. Also, do not apply compresses to places where there are cuts or abrasions.
Save your sore limb. Don’t move it unnecessarily. Get into a comfortable position. You can put your hand in a sling to reduce pain and swelling. If possible, do not sit directly on the ground, put something under your body.
If you suspect a fracture, try to immobilize the damaged area together with two adjacent joints. Use something long and stiff – a rail, stick or board. You can also tie a broken leg with a bandage to a healthy one.
When there is an open wound, secure it. Avoid getting dirty. Use a dry and sterile dressing. Do not use any ointments.
If you are able to move, go to the Hospital Emergency Department or the Orthopedic Emergency Room. The injury should be checked by a doctor and appropriate therapy should be given.
When the injury is more serious, wait for the ambulance to arrive.
Fall on ice – what to do to avoid it?
The effects of falling on the ice can be very painful and the recovery time is long. Therefore, it is better to ensure that an accident does not happen. How?
- Wear shoes that are not only comfortable but also have a suitable non-slip sole, preferably with a tread pattern. Avoid high heels
- Wear clothes that do not restrict movement. Replace the long coat with a shorter jacket
- Avoid potentially dangerous routes – icy and covered with frozen snow. Sometimes it is better to take a road for your health
- If you have to climb up slippery outside steps, be sure to stick to the handrail
- Adjust your walking pace to the conditions, do not run on the ice
- Try to keep your balance. When carrying something, the weight should be shared between both hands
