Fake tanning is harmful

According to the Krebshilfe Society, more than 4 million young Germans regularly visit tanning salons. At the same time, as the oncologists emphasize, young skin is especially susceptible to the action of ultraviolet rays. “By exposing it to radiation prematurely, young fashionistas increase the risk of skin cancer severalfold,” they warn.

Fake tanning is not so safe for adults either. The Krebshilfe report says that by regularly visiting a tanning bed, people under 35 are twice as likely to be diagnosed with cancer in old age. Fake tanning also suppresses the immune system. A number of tanning products have been shown to emit ultraviolet radiation, the level of which is many times higher than the exposure in the midday sun.

According to the organization, 140 thousand people fall ill with skin cancer in Germany every year, while about 22 thousand – a particularly dangerous type of it – malignant melanoma. About 3 thousand deaths associated with melanoma are registered in the country annually.
