Biography of Faina Ranevskaya

The real name of the actress is Faina Feldman. Faina borrowed her pseudonym “Ranevskaya” from her beloved Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, and more specifically from Ranevskaya, a landowner from the play “The Cherry Orchard”.

Once Fanny had money out of her purse, the bills were picked up by the wind, and she just laughed: “How beautiful they fly!”, Her gentleman noticed that she was “just like Ranevskaya”. The patronymic Georgievna is also not very real, because her father’s name was Girsh Khaimovich.

Parents

Faina was born on August 27, 1896 in Taganrog, into a wealthy Jewish family.

Father’s house

On Frunze Street, house number 10, in which the actress lived, is still intact. In those days it was a different address – Nikolaevskaya Street, house number 12. Many are mistaken when they say that it was in this house that she was born.

House of Ranevskaya. Taganrog, Frunze st., 10

Previously, the house on Nikolaevskaya Street, No. 12, belonged to the merchant Mikhail Nikolaevich Kamburov. The house was bought out and rebuilt by the order of his father. The family moved here in 1898, when Faina was two years old.

From 1866 to 1923, the street was called Nikolaevskaya, in memory of Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov (son of Emperor Alexander II), who visited Taganrog in August 1863 while traveling across Russia.

Within the walls of this house, the character of Faina was formed, the first books were read in this house. From here she went to elementary school women’s Mariinsky gymnasium, but did not finish it. Faina received an excellent home upbringing and education with the help of a governess: she studied music, singing, dancing and foreign languages.

To Moscow!

From the age of 14, Faina Georgievna became interested in theater, attended classes at a private theater studio. Then her room was filled with dreams of the theater … At the age of nineteen she left for Moscow. She never returned to Taganrog.

Ranevskaya was surrounded by friends, colleagues, fans – and still she considered herself deeply lonely and useless. The habit of saying what she thinks made Ranevskaya unattractive for friendship. But Faina Georgievna, for all her causticity, had a merciful heart and a kind soul.

She adopted a freezing dog, and he has been her family in recent years. She was truly a unique and unrepeatable person. There can be any attitude to this originality. But indifference is the only impossible feeling.

A curtain

Ranevskaya’s 60-year acting career resulted in dozens of roles on stage and about thirty in films. The actress was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the USSR (1961) and three Stalin Prizes (in 1949 and twice in 1951).

She passed away on July 19, 1984 in Moscow, after a heart attack and pneumonia. She was buried next to her sister Bella at the Moscow Donskoy cemetery, plot 4.

In 1992, the English encyclopedia “Who’s Who” included Faina Georgievna in the list of the ten most outstanding actresses of the XNUMXth century.

In 2008, near the house of Faina Ranevskaya in Taganrog, a monument was erected in the form of her heroine – Lyalya from the film “Foundling”. I can say with confidence that Faina Georgievna would not have liked the monument. This was her least favorite role. Why didn’t the author of the monument take this into account?

Ranevskaya lived all her life lonely: no family, no children. One day she was asked if she had ever been in love.

– But what about – said Ranevskaya – I was nineteen years old, I entered a provincial troupe – and immediately fell in love. Into the first hero lover! He was such a handsome man! And I, to tell the truth, was terrible, like a mortal sin … But I really loved to walk around, gawked at him, he certainly had zero attention …

And one day he suddenly comes up and says in his chic baritone: “Baby, are you renting a room near the theater? So wait tonight: I will be with you at seven o’clock. ” I ran to the entrepreneur, took the money as a salary, bought wine, all kinds of food, got dressed, put on makeup – I was sitting, waiting.

Not at seven, not at eight, at nine he comes … drunk and with a woman! “Baby,” he says, “take a walk somewhere for a couple of hours, my dear!” Since then, not just falling in love — I can’t look at them: you bastards and scoundrels!
