The owner of a dry paint factory, several houses, a shop, a mill on Aleksandrovskaya Street and the ship “Saint Nicholas”, a major manufacturer. Head of the Taganrog synagogue at Turgenevsky lane, 46 (1912-1917), honorary member of the Department of Institutions of the Empress Maria.

Mother – Milka Rafailovna Zagovailova. In addition to Faina, the family had three sons: Jacob, Rudolph, Lazar and daughter Bella. Faina’s parents and brother left Russia in the post-revolutionary years and settled in Prague.

Father’s house

On Frunze Street, house number 10, in which the actress lived, is still intact. In those days it was a different address – Nikolaevskaya Street, house number 12. Many are mistaken when they say that it was in this house that she was born.

Previously, the house on Nikolaevskaya Street, No. 12, belonged to the merchant Mikhail Nikolaevich Kamburov. The house was bought out and rebuilt by the order of his father. The family moved here in 1898, when Faina was two years old.

From 1866 to 1923, the street was called Nikolaevskaya, in memory of Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov (son of Emperor Alexander II), who visited Taganrog in August 1863 while traveling across Russia.

Ranevskaya’s 60-year acting career resulted in dozens of roles on stage and about thirty in films. The actress was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the USSR (1961) and three Stalin Prizes (in 1949 and twice in 1951).

She passed away on July 19, 1984 in Moscow, after a heart attack and pneumonia. She was buried next to her sister Bella at the Moscow Donskoy cemetery, plot 4.
