Facial peeling: what is it for?

We will tell you what peeling is, share tips for its implementation and list several suitable beauty products.

What is peeling

“Peeling is the process of removing dead skin particles from the surface of the skin,” says Ekaterina Turubara, medical expert at Vichy. And this is an important and necessary thing, because the accumulation of dead cells leads to a thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis – hyperkeratosis.

And he, in turn, is guilty of such problems as:

  • blockage of pores;

  • the appearance of acne;

  • dull complexion;

  • slowing down the renewal of the epidermis.

Regular exfoliation is essential to restore healthy, radiant skin. And in this case there is no equal to such a type of care as peeling.

Mechanism of action

The principle of peeling depends on its type. There are two of them: chemical and mechanical.

“During chemical peeling, acids, when they get on the skin, dissolve corneodesmosomes – the bonds between the cells of the stratum corneum, thus exfoliating the surface layer of the epidermis,” explains Ekaterina Turubara.

At the heart of mechanical peeling is the work of abrasive particles that physically eliminate dead cells, literally “cleansing” them from the skin. This is how scrubs work, or rather, their active components – abrasives of natural origin (crushed seeds of fruits and berries, microcrystals of salt and sugar) or synthetic (polyethylene granules).

What is peeling for?

The older we get, the slower the renewal of keratinocytes: at the age of 20, the renewal cycle is 28 days, by the age of 50 it is twice as long. What is the result? Skin covered with a thick layer of keratinized cells. It looks unsympathetic: a grayish tint and rough to the touch.

The ultimate goal of any peel is to make the skin more even and smooth.

The purpose of peeling is to help the skin enter the path of renewal. Therefore, it is important that this stage of care is not one-time, inspired, but regular. The frequency of exfoliation is 1-3 times a week, depending on the type of skin and its condition.

Only if these conditions are met, you can count on the following results:

  1. skin radiance and even complexion;

  2. less visible pores;

  3. good susceptibility to creams and serums;

  4. increased durability of make-up.

Types of skin peeling

Professional peeling in a beauty clinic will give odds to any home skin exfoliation.

There are several types of peeling.

Chemical

The mechanism of action is damage to the skin by chemical agents (acids), which contribute to the exfoliation of dead cells. In cosmetology, substances with keratolytic properties are used for this:

  • salicylic and carboxylic acids;

  • hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic).

As a rule, peeling with high concentrations of acids is carried out in clinics and beauty salons.

Mechanical

Abrasive particles work on the elimination of dead skin cells. These can be scrubs for home use or hardware procedures that are carried out in the salon (microdermabrasion).

Laser

One of the most requested hardware procedures. It is performed only in the cosmetologist’s office. The method is based on laser radiation. It is used for superficial, medium, deep peeling. The recovery period depends on the degree of exposure.

Radio wave

During the session, electromagnetic radiation in the radio frequency range is used. By the way, radio wave peeling also accelerates the process of collagen synthesis in the skin.

How to determine what type of peel you need

The decision on which professional peeling you need is made only by a doctor.

If you are undergoing a peeling course in a salon or clinic, then everything is simple: trust the doctor, he will choose the best method and frequency of exposure. The main guidelines will be the type of your skin, its condition, existing problems.

Surface

Suitable for the following tasks:

  • pigmentation;

  • superficial wrinkles;

  • dull complexion.

The course includes 5-7 procedures with an interval of 10 days. To consolidate the effect, it is recommended to repeat the course every six months.

Median

It is carried out under the supervision of a doctor in the clinic. To treat the skin, acids are used in a sufficiently high concentration, after which the skin begins to actively peel off.

Indications:

  • pronounced wrinkles;

  • hyperpigmentation.

Usually such peeling is carried out no more than once a year.

Deep

One of the most aggressive types of peeling. It is carried out very rarely, exclusively for medical reasons and only in a clinic.

Safety measures

Peeling is considered a seasonal procedure. As a rule, it is not carried out in the summer and at the end of spring, as well as in frosty winter. The reasons are.

  • With high solar activity, the risk of hyperpigmentation increases.

  • In frost, especially if it is accompanied by a cold wind, the thinned epidermis can be injured.

  • A sharp change in air temperature in winter (cold outside and hot indoors) has a bad effect on the state of blood vessels, and redness after the procedure will not subside for longer.

The best time to visit a beautician is the middle or end of autumn, early spring, when it is cloudy outside and the air temperature stays around zero.

If you are not ready to wait for ideal weather conditions, you can limit yourself to using home peeling products. For example, lotion or mask with acids. The main thing to remember: after using such cosmetics, you need to protect your skin with a cream with an SPF of at least 30.
