How to make a mask at home
In order for a face mask to be effective at home, certain rules must be followed. Everything is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. How to make a face mask at home – read below.
Preparation for application at home
Rules for applying a face mask
Face masks at home are applied with hands or a brush. The main thing is that both are clean. Usually the area of the lips and the skin around the eyes are not affected, but there are exceptions. If the texture and density of the natural mask allow, distribute it in a thick layer.
How long to keep a homemade face mask
Homemade face masks last 15-20 minutes or until dry. Do not overdo the mask (both natural and cosmetic), otherwise you risk experiencing a feeling of tightness and burning.
How to wash off a homemade mask correctly
Masks are removed with a damp sponge or a towel soaked in warm water along the massage lines. Then the face should be rinsed with cool water.
Care after the mask at home
Moisturizing the skin with the usual cream is necessary after you have made a face mask at home.
How often can masks be used at home
Home masks are usually done 1-2 times a week, and moisturizers can be applied every day.
Which mask to choose for home: natural or cosmetic
Homemade | Purchased | |
composition | Not every potentially beneficial component will appeal to the skin, and there are not many proven ingredients. | The manufacturer uses a wide variety of components, including exotic ones that you cannot buy in our latitudes. |
Efficiency | The effect of a homemade mask cannot be compared with ready-made masks, and safety remains a big question. | The ready-made formulas use extracts and extracts of plants, vitamins obtained from fruits, acids in a working dosage. And that’s it. |
Expert Opinion | Ekaterina Turubara, Vichy: “If the finished products are marked “hypoallergenic”, you can be sure that the mask will not cause a negative skin reaction. But how it will react to acids from “live” berries and fruits, no one knows.” | |
Convenience | Homemade face masks get dirty quite often, especially if they are made up of pigmented berries and spices. And it’s inconvenient. | Using ready-made products is not only convenient, but also pleasant: texture, smell, color – the manufacturer carefully considers all these characteristics. |
The best face masks at home: recipes vs cosmetics
We present the most successful, in the opinion of the Healthy-Food editors, recipes for masks and cosmetic products.
Natural face mask for acne (for problem skin)
Act: Such a mask at home cleanses the pores, soothes the skin and prevents the appearance of new imperfections.
Ingredients:
1 st. l. kaolin;
1–2 tbsp. l. mineral water;
1 st. l. oatmeal or oatmeal ground in a blender;
1 tsp. honey;
3-4 drops of tea tree oil.
How to prepare and use:
mix dry ingredients;
dilute with water to a paste state;
add honey and stir;
add essential oil;
Apply to the face, avoiding the eye contour, for 10-15 minutes.
Editorial opinion. It is good that oatmeal and honey soften the effect of clay, which dries the skin great, pulling dirt out of the pores. Tea tree oil works as an antiseptic and soothes. But we still vote for a ready-made clay-based mask, developed by professionals specifically for problem skin.
Purifying Mattifying Mask Effaclar, La Roche-Posay thoroughly cleanses the skin and controls its oiliness thanks to two types of clay and thermal water. The manufacturer also made sure that the skin does not experience discomfort either during use or after. But it is important to remember that any clay mask should not be overexposed.
Homemade anti-aging face mask
Act: renews, moisturizes and smoothes the skin.
Ingredients:
½ avocado;
3 tbsp. l. yogurt;
1 st. l. honey;
1 Art. l olive oil.
How to prepare and use:
peel and mash the avocado, mix with the rest of the ingredients;
apply on face for 20 minutes, rinse with warm water;
Finally, rinse your face with cool water.
Editorial opinion. Obviously, such a mask at home has excellent purposes – yogurt exfoliates old cells, avocado and olive oils nourish, honey moisturizes. Benefit, albeit minimal, the mask will bring. But the question of the effectiveness and safety of the recipe remains open, as it always happens when it comes to homemade products.
Night mask for elasticity and smoothness of the skin of the face, Kiehl’s contains extracts of hibiscus and ginger leaves, makes the skin softer and more elastic, reduces wrinkles.
Mask for oily skin at home
Act: unclogs pores and exfoliates dead cells.
Ingredients:
1–2 tbsp. l. yogurt;
1 st. l. chickpea (or oatmeal) flour;
1 st. l. honey (optional)
How to prepare and use:
mix all the ingredients;
Apply evenly on the face, wash off after 15 minutes.
Editorial opinion. The fermented milk product stimulates cell renewal, and the flour acts as a thickener for the mask and an abrasive for the skin. In general, with this recipe, everything is clear. Good, but boring. Is it time to try something new at home?
Facial mask “Magic clay. Cleansing and matting” for combination and oily skin, L’Oréal Paris cleanses pores and mattifies with three types of natural clay and eucalyptus.
Natural mask for dry skin
Act: combines light exfoliation and nourishment of the skin.
Ingredients:
1 tsp coconut oil;
1 tsp sour cream;
¼ tsp cocoa powder.
mix until smooth;
apply on the neck and face, including the area around the eyes;
leave for a maximum of 20 minutes.
Editorial opinion. It seems that this homemade mask has everything that dry skin needs: soft exfoliation due to lactic acid, and exfoliating cocoa powder, and coconut oil, which nourishes the skin and restores its protective barrier. But even this relatively original mask at home is far from ready-made products from professional “chefs”. And this is quite natural.
Sugar Nourishing Facial Scrub, L’Oréal Paris is a great way to exfoliate the skin and nourish it at the same time. In the composition – three types of sugar (brown, yellow, white), cocoa butter and coconut. Can you imagine how delicious this scrub smells? And the skin after its use becomes velvety.
Homemade mask for combination skin
Act: cleanses and moisturizes the skin at the same time.
Ingredients:
1 st. l. rose petals;
20 ml of mineral water;
1 st. l. oatmeal.
How to prepare and use:
soak rose petals in mineral water for 30 minutes, then mix with flour;
apply on face for 30 minutes.
Editorial opinion. Rose petal-based water softens the skin, while oatmeal absorbs sebum, softens and works like a delicate scrub. You can try, no doubt. There will be no harm from this mask. But the effectiveness is questionable. There is no comparison with ready-made cosmetic masks based on flower water and plant extracts.
Moisturizing mask with anti-stress effect Hydra Zen Jelly Mask, Lancôme based on rose water and peony extract refreshes. Cocoa extract and niacinamide (responsible for the synthesis of lipids in the skin) immediately reduce the feeling of discomfort, dryness, intensively moisturize the skin, make it smooth and soft. Can be used as daily night care.
Moisturizing natural face mask
Act: moisturizes and softens the skin.
Ingredients:
1 st. l. gruel from the leaves of aloe vera;
1 st. l. avocado pulp;
2 tsp sour cream or thick yogurt.
How to prepare and use
Mix everything and apply on face for 20 minutes.
Editorial opinion. A good option for a face mask at home if nothing else was on hand, but we will abandon this mask in favor of a ready-made one. And we have a strong argument. Even two – with aloe vera and pomegranate extract.
Sheet mask “Moisturizing + Aquabomb”, Garnier with pomegranate extract copes with dryness in a matter of minutes.
Natural mask for the skin around the eyes
Act: refreshes the skin, relieves puffiness, eliminates signs of fatigue.
Ingredients:
½ cup brewed green tea;
1-2 tsp olive oil;
½ cucumber (grated).
How to prepare and use:
add olive oil and cucumber to the cooled tea;
cut cotton pads in half;
put in the prepared liquid;
squeeze lightly;
put the discs on foil and put them in the refrigerator for half an hour;
apply patches under the eyes for 20 minutes.
Editorial opinion. This homemade mask recipe is good because it allows substitutions – instead of tea, you can use a decoction of herbs, and replace the cucumber, for example, with honey. It will come in handy if you do not have real patches created by professionals in your arsenal. But there is no need to talk about a serious effect.
Mask for the skin around the eyes in patches Advanced Génifique, Lancôme made not of cotton wool, but of high-tech material impregnated with concentrate serum. In 10 minutes, the patches give the skin radiance, smooth it and, with regular use, visibly reduce bags under the eyes.
