Honey has been called the elixir of life, youth, and beauty for hundreds of years. You can’t argue with that. But can they replace cosmetics? Let’s weigh the pros and cons.
The benefits and effectiveness of honey masks for facial skin
Contains hundreds of biologically active substances (not all of them have been identified to this day).
Has bactericidal action.
Strengthens local immunity.
Moisturizes the skin and prevents the evaporation of moisture.
Warms.
Cleanses the skin, mattifies and gives it radiance.
It is interesting that the listed characteristics are characteristic of any kind of honey. But its composition – those same hundreds of biologically active substances – and their concentrations can vary from species to species. And even from bank to bank. Because the set of antioxidants, vitamins, polyphenols and other things depends on the plants from whose pollen the bees made their honey.

Mechanism of action on the skin
Honey is suitable for all skin types.
Oily and problematic will help clean and mattify.
Combined softens, moisturizes dry areas and “works out” the problematic T-zone due to its bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties.
It nourishes normal skin with nutrients and maintains moisture levels.
Dry and very dry will soften, strengthen, moisturize and prevent moisture loss.
Our test will help you determine your skin type.
However, the above abilities are not directly related to the rejuvenating effect.

What to give preference to: a homemade mask or a ready-made product
Healthy-Food trusts professionals and recommends purchasing ready-made cosmetics. Still, the face is not a testing ground for experiments.
Compare homemade and purchased masks with honey
Homemade | Purchased | |
composition | The composition and the thousand-year practice of using honey, at first glance, incline in its favor. But only if it is really natural honey. Are you sure you bought this one? | Many manufacturers are happy to include honey in their products. But the quality of the original product is carefully checked. |
Efficiency | A honey mask will certainly bring benefits – if it is really honey, and not a fake based on tinted sugar syrup. But even on jars with real honey they don’t write: it restores radiance to the skin, reduces wrinkles, increases skin hydration, etc. | A clear purpose, a verified ratio of ingredients, tests carried out before the release of the product on the market, user reviews – all this allows us to seriously count on the promised effect. The manufacturer is responsible for it. Unlike the beekeeper. |
Ekaterina turubara | “For thousands of years, women have applied self-made compositions according to “grandmother’s recipes” to their faces. It is believed that the very first masks began to be used in ancient Egypt, for example, the famous queen Cleopatra really appreciated the bleaching mixture of honey, milk and clay. But does it make sense today? The natural course of the development of civilization has led to the creation of effective formulas that take into account the experience of millennia.” | |
Convenience | Honey masks are definitely not for everyone. Stickiness and rather long rinsing are not the most pleasant aspects of homemade honey cosmetics. | Honey (with all its beneficial properties) is included in convenient creams, milks and even washing gels. In our opinion, these are definitely more convenient forms. |

Rules and recommendations for use
When choosing homemade cosmetics, it makes sense to follow these recommendations:
wash and wipe your face with tonic before and after applying a home mask;
when applying cosmetics with honey, first collect the hair in a ponytail or bun (or use a headband);
it is more convenient to maintain a home mask on the face while lying down, because the texture quite often does not allow you to be in an upright position;
Apply a moisturizer after rinsing off the mask.
Safety measures
Honey is one of the strongest allergens. Be sure to test it on your skin before you start cosmetic creativity.
To knead the masks, use flowing, unsweetened honey.
Make sure to choose the natural “correct” honey. Real honey should have an aroma reminiscent of the plants from whose pollen it was obtained. If there is no smell, most likely it is not honey, but sugar syrup, or the bees were fed sugar.
Only “young” honey (in late summer and early autumn) can be completely liquid in our latitudes. If in winter you are offered such “fresh” honey, most likely the composition is not natural. And by the way, there is no sea buckthorn honey.
