Eyebrow microblading
How is microblading different from permanent makeup and what is its cosmetic effect? We tell you what you need to be prepared for for those who decide to make beautiful, thick eyebrows using the micro-incision technique.

Permanent eyebrow makeup is changing and improving. The procedures themselves become more comfortable, and the result is more natural and of high quality. If earlier eyebrows made in a tattoo parlor were visible from afar, now they can be created so skillfully that they can be distinguished from real ones only upon very close examination. It all depends on the level of the master, technique and quality of the material. For microblading, or the manual method of tattooing that we are talking about, skill and experience play a very important role¹. Let’s talk about this procedure in more detail.

What is eyebrow microblading

Literally translated from English, microblading means “tiny blade”, which explains the essence. Permanent eyebrow makeup in this technique is performed not with a tattoo machine, but with a miniature blade. More precisely, it is a bundle of ultrathin needles. The nozzle with these needles is inserted into the maniple – a small tool resembling a pen for writing. With this “handle” the master makes stroke after stroke of micro-cuts through which the pigment is introduced. The paint penetrates only into the upper layers of the epidermis. An experienced master can create fine hairs of different lengths, and the result is as natural as possible.

Cons of microblading

The biggest disadvantage is insufficiently experienced craftsmen who immediately take up this technique. Yes, it is more budgetary in terms of equipment, but for a good result it requires a lot of practical experience and knowledge. The pigment should be injected at the same depth, without drops. If you enter too small – the pigment will peel off along with the crust after healing, and too deep, into the lower layers of the dermis – the color will be too dense and dark. Experienced masters who have mastered classic tattooing before microblading have their hands full, and they work smoothly with a maniple. But for beginners who decide to immediately work with microblading, it doesn’t work right away. As a result, uneven coloring is visible, the eyebrows will look unattractive, they may irretrievably lose some of their hairs.

How is eyebrow microblading done?

  • The master draws the contour of future eyebrows with a cosmetic pencil, selects the appropriate color and shade of pigment.
  • The skin is degreased, treated with an anesthetic and a disinfectant solution.
  • The master traces the hairs with a needle-blade, creating micro-cuts that are filled with a coloring pigment. The procedure lasts one and a half to two hours.
  • The affected area is treated with a disinfectant solution.

Consequences of microblading

The procedure at first glance is not too traumatic, healing occurs mostly without any problems. But there are long-term consequences that can be food for thought when choosing this tattoo technique:

  • When the pigment comes off, thin scars are exposed. If the effect of thick eyebrows is achieved, there may be a lot of scars, and the skin will no longer be perfectly smooth as it was before the procedure.
  • During the procedure, the hair follicles can be injured, which will stop the growth of hairs. In some places, voids form on the eyebrows.

Eyebrow microblading reviews

Svetlana Khukhlyndina, master teacher of permanent make-up:

Microblading, or as I also call it, a manual tattoo method, requires great skill and experience. This technique is not suitable for beginners who do not yet feel the skin well enough. But, alas, some are taken, and the result is deplorable: somewhere the pigment came from, somewhere not, there may be spots and even scars. Then you need to clean it all with a laser and block it.

In general, microblading was invented for Asian skin, which is denser than ours. Therefore, on light thin skin, it does not heal so well and does not look so good, the pigment lies deeper than necessary.

At one time, there was a real boom in microblading – and the effect is more natural immediately after the procedure, and the eyebrow is more beautiful, and the manipulator pen is cheaper than a traditional tattoo machine.

Then all the minuses were discovered, and this method began to be treated more carefully. Laying the hair to the hair shallowly, at the same level is more difficult than shading with a machine. Somewhere I pressed harder, somewhere softer – and it turns out that the fresh drawing seems to be beautiful, but the healed eyebrows are not very good.

But in skillful hands, microblading can really achieve a good effect.

Popular questions and answers

Microblading is a responsible procedure, since the result is literally obvious, and annoying failures are difficult to hide. Not surprisingly, before going for this procedure, women try to learn more about it. Answered popular questions master of permanent make-up Svetlana Khukhlyndina.

How long does eyebrow microblading last?

A year or two, depending on the pigment. Light and light pigment disappears faster, which is usually chosen by blondes and older women to achieve a more natural discreet effect. The pigment is denser and brighter and lasts 2 years longer. On oily skin, the dye lasts less than on thin and dry skin.

How does eyebrow healing take place after microblading?

Approximately on the 3rd day, the damaged skin is tightened, covered with a thin film, which begins to peel off on the 5th-7th day. In the first week, the color looks brighter than it actually will, and lightens gradually. We will see the final result only in a month, when the epidermis is completely renewed. If necessary, a correction is made – hairs are added where they are missing or a brighter shade is given if it turned out to be not expressive enough. Its result will have to wait another month with the same stages of healing.

Do I need to take care of my eyebrows after microblading?

The main thing in the care of eyebrows after microblading is not to steam them for two weeks. That is, do not sit in a hot bath, bath, sauna, solarium. You can take a warm shower, wash your hair, trying not to wet your eyebrows. Otherwise, the film crusts formed on the wounds will get wet and fall off ahead of time.

After the manipulation, the skin is very tight when it dries up, so you can lubricate it twice a day with a thin layer of petroleum jelly or a petroleum jelly-based product for three to four days. In wound healing ointments there is no such need. Vaseline or Vaseline-based products can be provided by the master.

Can you do eyebrow microblading at home?

It is forbidden. This is a manipulation with a violation of the integrity of the skin, so it should be carried out under appropriate conditions, with sterile instruments, in order to eliminate the risk of infection.

Which is better, microblading or powder brows?

With the help of microblading, you can not only draw hairs, but also make shading (powder eyebrows). What is better – the client decides, listening to the advice of the master.

If there are some areas with gaps – a hair is better, if the eyebrow is normal and you just want to add an accent – then shading will do.

But keep in mind that the hair technique is better for dry skin – it is smooth, the hair will heal beautifully on it. If the skin is porous, very oily, sensitive, the hairs will be uneven, blurry, will look ugly. For such skin, it is better to perform powder eyebrows using the hardware method – permanent makeup machines².

What are the contraindications for microblading?

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, dermatological problems (dermatitis, eczema, etc.) in the acute stage, alcohol or drug intoxication, blood clotting disorders, diabetes mellitus in the decompensation stage, HIV, AIDS, hepatitis, syphilis, epilepsy, severe somatic diseases, acute inflammatory processes (including acute respiratory infections and acute respiratory viral infections), keloid scars, cancer, pigment intolerance.

Relative contraindications: high blood pressure, taking antibiotics, critical days, drinking alcohol the day before the procedure.

What do you recommend doing – microblading or hardware permanent makeup?

I prefer to do eyebrow permanent make-up using hair technique or shading using professional permanent make-up machines. If a client wants to do microblading, I advise you to choose a master, focusing on his healed work.
