Eye pain is usually a concern because we are concerned about the possibility of eye damage or even loss of vision. As it turns out, eye pain is most often caused by harmless external factors, such as eye strain, fatigue or irritation of the conjunctiva. Sometimes, however, eye pain is caused by a serious illness. eye pain occurs with stress, fatigue, arterial hypertension, migraines, diseases of the paranasal sinuses, but also glaucoma or eye cancer. How to recognize a medical condition?
Eye pain – a foreign body in the eye
Eye pain occurs when the eyeball becomes irritated by a foreign body. The tiniest grain of sand can cause intense pain, redness and tearing from the eye. The eye, and especially the cornea, are organs that are very much innervated, so every tiny particle will cause an unpleasant stinging sensation and pain. If the foreign body is large enough to be visible in a mirror, for example, it can be removed with a gauze pad or a clean tissue. It also happens that a foreign body unfortunately sticks into the eyeball. Then, under no circumstances can you try to get rid of the foreign body on your own. Such a case requires a visit to an ophthalmologist. Eye pain may be caused by an injury to the eyeball. Then, in addition to eye pain, there is bleeding, swelling, and vision deterioration.
If eye pain prevents normal work and functioning, make an online consultation with the possibility of obtaining a sick leave.
Eye pain – allergy
Eye pain is a symptom of an allergic reaction. In the case of allergies, eye pain is accompanied by watery, itchy, swollen and red eyes. The allergies that most commonly cause eye pain are seasonal allergies, such as those to pollen. There are also contact allergies, in which eye pain is caused by the use of a specific cosmetic, cream, soap or mascara. To avoid eye pain, simply avoid contact with products that cause allergic symptoms.

Eye pain – inflammation in the eye
Inflammation in the eye includes conjunctivitis and blepharitis. With conjunctivitis, eye pain occurs along with hyperemia, tearing, itching, and often purulent discharge or other transparent discharge. Conjunctivitis can be caused by infection with viruses, fungi, bacteria or an allergy. Blepharitis, on the other hand, is diagnosed by pain in the eye and its strong burning sensation. This disease is usually the result of insufficient hand hygiene. Rubbing the eyelids with dirty fingers causes a medical condition and requires antibiotic drops.

Eye pain – inflammation of the optic nerve
Optic neuritis is another disease that manifests itself by pain in the eye. Additionally, visual acuity and color recognition are reduced. Eye pain in this case occurs when the eye moves, which is due to the swelling of the sheaths of the optic nerve. The muscles that move the eyeball touch the sheaths, and this causes eye pain. It is worth noting that optic neuritis involving the retrobulbar segment of the eye is one of the first symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
Eye pain – dry eye syndrome
Dry eye syndrome is a condition that causes the feeling of sand particles under the eyelid. The pain is light and oppressive. The cause of this disease is an insufficient number of tears or their incorrect composition. In addition to eye pain, there are also itching of the eyelids, blurred vision and dried discharge that remains on the eyelids.
A way to reduce the symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome is to properly lubricate your eyes with products such as Lakroft lubricating eye drops.
Eye pain – cancer
Eye pain is not a symptom of cancer. In the initial stages of an eyeball tumor, eye pain does not appear at all. The eye only starts sore when the tumor is large enough to put pressure on the eyeball or the optic nerve. In addition to eye pain, visual disturbances and protruding eyes are also noticed.
Eye pain should be consulted quickly with an ophthalmologist. Do not wait and take advantage of an ophthalmological visit! If you already have an eye surgery planned, it is worth taking advantage of a specialist consultation at the Eyemed ophthalmology clinic.
