Expressive movements are something that gives out, transmits, reflects and forms the state of a person. Usually this is a facial expression (facial expression), expressive body movements (pantomime), gestures and expressive intonations. Expressive movements are a peculiar and rich language for conveying shades of emotions, feelings, assessments, desires and relationships.

It is with their emotions that a small child tells his parents what he wants and what parents now need. Most women use their emotions quite purposefully when they need to harness men to realize their wonderful plans. You can say a lot to a loved one with one expression of the eyes, one intonation, one quiet exhalation … By observing emotional movements, you can even unravel what the other person wants to hide from you. See Emotions: communicative function

It is unlikely that expressive movements have a single source. Expressive movements can be part of an emotional reaction, a deliberate performance in an emotional action, or the result of a good or bad habit.

Expressive movements are closely related to emotions and the general state of a person. Expressive movements not only reflect emotions, but are one of the natural channels for triggering them.

The one who owns his expressive movements can trigger the necessary emotions with their help. The one whose expressive movements are bright, but involuntary, triggers emotions in himself against his will. If you master relaxation and learn to live through emotionally difficult situations without expressive movements, the main tone in your soul will be calm↑.

Emotional actions can be accompanied by experiences in very different degrees. The more emotional actions are accompanied by experience, the more they are considered sincere. In other cases, they are considered either manipulations (including cute manipulations) or just expressive movements↑.

Skillful communicators use expressive movements in communication quite consciously. Expressive movements are the most important part of the transmitted text, where meanings and relationships are conveyed non-verbally. Copying the expressive movements of a partner in communication is a moment of attachment and is an effective means of establishing contact. What and how can be copied, and what is wrong — see Extensions.

Not all people expressive movements are developed equally: there are people who are able to clearly and accurately express a large palette of emotions and feelings with their face, voice and gestures, there are people with rather poor expressive movements. The good thing is that expressive movements can be developed, and those who set such a task will soon have this richest set of tools at their disposal↑.

At the same time, it should be borne in mind that good breeding implies restraint in expressive movements. Too loud laughter, waving hands speaks of low culture, educated people often replace the breadth of gestures and loudness of voice with accuracy, subtlety and targeting in expressive movements↑. This is a separate art: the ability to express one’s feelings not with a shovel of the palm, but with live playing fingers, each of which can speak separately; express surprise — not with a turn of the whole body, but with one glance or a raised eyebrow. The face of a well-mannered person usually expresses calmness, attentiveness and goodwill. It sensitively reflects the state of the partner and expresses those emotions that serve as support and operational suggestion for the partner.

An important point in communication is the ability to understand the expressive movements of the interlocutor. Attention to body language, knowledge of the characteristics of expressive movements in different groups and cultures makes communication more effective, at least adequate. It is useful even for close people to check how well they read each other’s expressive movements (see the Emotional Dictionary exercise).

The development of expressive movements in children

The first expressive movements in children are sufficiently involuntary, then children master them in the same way as speech and other aspects of human culture — in the process of joint activity with adults, through the development of cultural patterns, through infection and in a free search for the best ways to influence parents.
