Manufacturers deceive customers by offering them not the freshest product.
Can vegetable oil go bad? Of course it can. If left in the light, it quickly turns rancid. Or it may be that the raw materials were already a little overdue, then the oil initially will not be of the best quality. True, if the label says “Top grade”, then the product should be as fresh as possible. But some manufacturers out of the blue assign this high title to their products.
Roskontrol experts checked seven brands of vegetable oils: Karolina, Blago, Rossiyanka, Sloboda, Zateya, Selyanochka, Mr. Ricco. Only three of them did not have any questions. The biggest complaints are from “Karolina” and “Selyanochka”. As it turned out, the highest grade declared on the label, these products do not correspond in terms of freshness.
As it turned out, these brands of oil exceeded the peroxide value, which shows how fresh the oil is.
“As the oil oxidizes, the acid number first rises, then the peroxide number,” they explain in
The lowest of all these indicators is in the oil of the Sloboda brand.
There were also claims to two brands – Rossiyanka and Zateya – because of their taste. The fact is that refined deodorized oil should not have any taste or smell at all. And these two oils had a distinct sunflower-seed flavor. However, some even like it.
When choosing a quality oil, experts advised to pay attention to the transparency of the product. There should be no sediment in the bottle. And before you cook or season salad on it, you should sniff the oil: if the smell is rancid, it is better to throw the product away.
“Rancid odor is a sign of oxidative deterioration in the product. The use of oxidized oil can be unsafe for health due to the presence of oxidation products, such as peroxide compounds and others, ”explains Irina Arkatova, chief specialist of the expert center of the Union of Consumers.
