Prof. Wysocki: you need to immunize 60-70 percent. population

“The population immunity that we need to earn as a society is needed to protect ourselves against the wave of further COVID-19 cases that may emerge in the fall. It will protect us not only against disease, but also against the consequences of the pandemic in the form of a number of restrictions, including lockdown, stopping the economy or paralysis of the functioning of the health care system »- said prof. Wysocki.

He pointed out that we can talk about population immunity when the greater part of the society produces antibodies against the coronavirus. They can be purchased naturally by overloading or by vaccination.

«In order to extinguish the epidemic, it is estimated that 60-70 percent of people need to be immunized. population »- said prof. Wysocki.

Coronavirus. We must vaccinate the youth

Prof. Wysocki believes that vaccinating adolescents, and when it is possible, also children, will benefit not only the society, but most of all the vaccinated.

«I hear the opinions of parents who say that we vaccinate young people for the benefit of others. But it is not entirely true, »he said. He added that “in the initial period of the pandemic, it was believed that the coronavirus did not pose a threat to young people and children, today it is known that this is not true, because everyone gets sick. It is true, however, that adolescents and children have a more gentle flow of COVID-19 than older people and are sometimes asymptomatic ”.

According to him, asymptomatic disease does not guarantee the absence of complications. «It happens that in adolescents and children, after undergoing COVID-19, we diagnose a very dangerous post-covid syndrome, the so-called PIMS. It is a multi-system inflammatory reaction with fever. It damages the heart muscle, coronary vessels, lungs, liver and other organs. It can cause permanent damage to health. It requires hospital treatment, administration of immunoglobulins, steroids »- he said. He added that “fortunately, this syndrome does not occur often, currently there are four children with this diagnosis at the Observation and Infectious Ward of the Provincial Children’s Hospital in Poznań”.

  1. Almost a quarter of Poles are not going to be vaccinated

According to prof. Wysocki, the risk of developing COVIDd-19 among young people is high. «Young people spend a lot of time with each other, do not obey restrictions and do not wear masks. They will return to school in September and if they are not vaccinated, there may be a risk of a fourth wave of cases in the fall »- he said.

He indicated that in the European Union only the Pfizer vaccine is allowed to vaccinate 16- and 17-year-olds. In the United States, children from 12 years of age can be vaccinated with the preparation of the same company. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) decides about the registration of the preparation in the EU.

90% of the reactions following the administration of the vaccine in children are gentle

Prof. Wysocki assessed that the fears of adverse reactions to vaccination in adolescents are unfounded.

«The reactions following the administration of the vaccine are the same as in adults and in 90% of cases. they are gentle. There may be fever, chills, pain at the vaccination site, headache »- he said. «There is also no evidence to suggest that vaccination may cause health complications in adulthood. The RNA used in vaccines is not the one that integrates into the human genome »- he pointed out. He added that “if we want to react quickly to epidemics that may occur in the future, we will use vaccines such as those against coronaviruses”.

  1. How many Poles have not taken the second dose of the vaccine?

The proposal to vaccinate young people and children in the schools of prof. Wysocki considers it helpful in accelerating vaccinations.

«Vaccinations in schools would improve the vaccination process. It is possible to organize the campaign, because Polish regulations stipulate that children can be vaccinated in the absence of their parents, if they have been informed about it, they will fill in the questionnaire and give their consent in writing. We will, of course, be able to talk about vaccinations in schools for younger years when the vaccine is approved, ”he said. (PAP)
