We observe an impairment of the sense of smell and taste very rarely in COVID-19 patients. It has to do with the British variant of the coronavirus – infectious diseases specialist Prof. Miłosz Parczewski. He added that some patients suffer from asymptomatic hypoxia.
“High-flow oxygen therapy is working at our hospital at full speed, which means that people are still ill, with severe damage to the lung tissue, but the situation has not worsened in recent days” – told PAP the head doctor for COVID-19 at the provincial hospital in Szczecin, Prof. Miłosz Parczewski.
When asked about which COVID-19 patients go to the provincial hospital, he replied that these are certainly patients younger than in the first wave of the pandemic.
«We see sick younger people with large changes in the lungs, with an occupancy of 20-40 percent. lung tissue. There are clearly fewer elderly people. It therefore seems that vaccination in groups over 70 years of age changes the age epidemiology, »said the infectious diseases specialist.

He added that the smell and taste disorder is very rare in the course of the disease, which was considered a characteristic symptom of coronavirus infection in the fall.
“It is related to the British variant, which probably dominates” – pointed out prof. Parczewski.

He noted that quite often patients report to doctors later than they should – after a week or even ten days after the first symptoms appear. He added that it was primarily the elderly, burdened with other diseases.
«You need to pay special attention to this. We also pay attention to obese people, with diabetes, with a history of thromboembolic complications, and with heart disease. They are also people who should observe more closely »- said the doctor.
He pointed out that drugs used in the treatment of primary health care “sometimes delay this help and then little can be done in the second phase of the disease”, in the so-called a cytokine storm.
«People who have infectious symptoms, but they are not so characteristic at the moment, report later. Some patients also suffer from hypoxia, but asymptomatic – that is, they feel this hypoxia less, and we observe the destruction of lung tissue or inflammation in the lungs.»- said prof. Parczewski.
When asked what factors should be taken into account when making decisions on epidemic restrictions, he indicated the number of daily infections, the number of beds occupied in relation to their total number and the number of ICU beds. He recalled that as far as the number of deaths is concerned, it refers to the situation from two weeks ago.
“Of course, this is an unpleasant and frightening number, but it does not tell us how to forecast for the next week or two” – noted the doctor. He also added that the number of positive tests must be taken into account in the total number of tests performed “assuming that there are many”.
