After updating the formula of the nightly moisturizing mask from the famous Kiehl’s Ultra Facial collection, we decided to ask the expert what, in fact, is the matter, what is remarkable about the new formula and, in general, how relevant night masks are. Kiehl’s expert Alexey Mironenko answers Healthy-Food’s questions.
Are there any differences between daytime and nighttime moisturizers?
The skin works differently during the day and at night, so the products are certainly developed taking into account its physiology. At night, the permeability of the skin increases, the production of sebum decreases. As a result, the skin loses 93% more moisture than during the day. Due to this physiological imbalance, it can become dry and more sensitive. Therefore, at night, the skin needs formulas that not only increase the amount of moisture inside, but also prevent its increased evaporation from the surface, that is, retain moisture.
It is often advised not to apply moisturizing cosmetics just before bedtime, so as not to provoke morning swelling. What about the night mask?
This rule does not work for everyone, but it is reasonable. Moisturizers, especially masks, should be applied an hour and a half before bedtime. It is also worth paying attention to the thickness of the applied layer: the mask, as a rule, is generously distributed. If swelling appears in the morning, try reducing the amount of product used.
How does a night mask differ from a night cream – texture, application technique, effect? What are its advantages?
Unlike the classic cream, the mask has a number of features, for example, three application options:
As a classic overnight mask. Warm a small amount between your fingers until soft. Apply to clean skin and massage with light circular motions until the mask melts and absorbs into the skin.
As an intensive moisturizing express treatment. Apply a generous layer on the skin, especially on dry areas. Leave for 15 minutes. Then, massage the rest of the product into the skin for more active moisturizing.
As a cleansing cold cream. Massage a small amount onto dry face with fingertips to remove impurities (stubborn make-up, etc.). For deeper cleansing, leave on for 60 seconds. Then gently remove it with paper towels or cotton pads.
Night moisturizing mask is indispensable when you need to feel the result overnight: restore and moisturize the skin, soothe it and remove the feeling of dryness.
The texture of Kiehl’s Renewed Hydrating Night Mask with 10,5% Squalane.
As for the new 10,5% Squalane Hydrating Night Face Mask, it has a transforming balm-in-oil texture and is highly concentrated in ingredients that repair and stabilize the skin barrier at night. Unlike a cream, the mask is more nourishing and gives the skin a pleasant sensation that affects overall comfort.
Who first needs a moisturizing mask at night? Who shouldn’t do it?
There are no people whose skin is so well hydrated that it can be “rehydrated”.
However, two warnings can be made regarding the new version of the Ultra Facial mask.
If you like the product to be completely absorbed into the skin, give preference to a moisturizer. The task of the mask is not only to penetrate the skin, but also to remain on the surface, protecting it from moisture evaporation.
If you like the light gel texture of the previous version of the Night Hydrating Mask, check out the Hydrating Soothing Calendula Aloe Mask. It will provide a similar effect and familiar feeling on the skin.
Does it make sense to use overnight masks on a daily basis?
How does squalane work for skin hydration? What are the benefits of this moisturizing ingredient?
Squalane is a highly purified plant lipid, analogous to human skin squalene, which forms the skin’s protective barrier. Squalane hydrates and soothes the skin. It is non-comedogenic and suitable for all skin types (from dry and sensitive to oily and acne prone). Squalane is easily absorbed and, by restoring the skin barrier, makes it soft, supple and hydrated.
