EXPERT OPINION. Lamellar water for hair – what is it?

If you’re looking for an at-home hair care product that instantly smoothes and adds shine to your hair – sort of like a salon lamination, then your search is over. Stylist Tatyana Preobrazhenskaya, an expert at Elseve L’Oréal Paris, is sure of this.

A new product has appeared on the market that has managed to become a star of social networks – a rinse-off hair conditioner, Elseve “Magic Water” lamellar care. This liquid conditioner instantly transforms hair and gives it a laminating effect: amazing shine along the entire length and softness. In addition, the tool fights split ends and smoothes strands prone to fluffiness. Perhaps the best part is that the tool needs to be kept on the hair for only 8 seconds, and after the first application you will get a visual result – noticeably shinier and smoother hair without weighing it down.

How can one product turn damaged strands silky smooth in 8 seconds?

Unlike thick, creamy conditioners, L’Oréal Paris’ Elseve lamellar treatment is water-based and spreads very quickly along the length of the hair, and does not contain silicones. The uniqueness of the composition is due to moisturizing components – lamellae, which envelop the hair, filling gaps in damaged areas, and create a smooth film coating. The lamellas are activated upon contact with water and cover each strand, this is how the effect of rich shine is created along the entire length.

Elseve lamellar care is applied to washed, damp hair after shampoo, instead of balm or as an addition to it. Apply 20 ml of the product in zigzag movements, over the entire length of the hair, avoiding contact with the scalp. With massage movements, evenly distribute the care along the length of the hair for 8 seconds, then rinse with water.

What happens if you don’t wash off the product?

The product name already contains the answer. Elseve lamellar care belongs to the liquid rinse-off care segment. Just like a regular conditioner, the formula requires rinsing. At the same time, the exposure time of lamellar care is only 8 seconds. When applied, you may feel a warming effect – this is normal!

Can it be used on medium to short hair?

The product is suitable for both long hair, and for hair of medium and short length, as well as for moderately and strongly curly hair. The longer the hair, the more product may be required for the desired result. For very long hair, apply 60-80 ml of conditioner, for thick and curly hair you need 40-60 ml of product, for short or thin hair, 20-30 ml of Magic Water is enough.

How does “Magic Water” combine with other care products (masks, balms, leave-in care)? What is the best order of product application?

Lamellar water is a liquid hair treatment that is very different from the masks you know. It does not weigh down the hair, working only with damaged areas. Lamellar care should be used after shampoo instead of conditioner or balm. But if there is a need for intensive care, then after it you can apply a mask, conditioner or balm for additional impact. Although the main advantage of lamellar care is that it can be used as a standalone treatment, saving you time. After applying the formula, the hair will become more shiny, fluffiness will go away, they will be combed as easily as after the balm. In this case, the overall effect will be similar to hair lamination. Another personal life hack from me: after using the product, blow-dry your hair using the brushing technique (using a round brush), so they will look even more impressive.

Lamellar water is suitable for hair of any length.

Can lamellar care be used permanently?

The tool does not have a cumulative effect, since the next time you wash your hair, there will be no trace of the lamellae. It takes care of your hair from time to time. It can be used 2-3 times a week before important events when you need to look perfect, and every time after washing your hair instead of conditioner and balm.

Is lamellar water compatible with co-washing?

Cowshing – washing your hair without using shampoo. This method gives the effect of smoother, more manageable and softer hair. More often it is chosen by the owners of dyed, wavy, curly, as well as dry and porous hair. And for girls with scalp prone to oily, this method is most likely not suitable.

Benefits of co-shing: intensely moisturizing dry hair, highlighting frizz of curly hair, eliminating frizz and enhancing shine. But there are also disadvantages: co-washing reduces hair volume, does not wash off styling products, and is not suitable for everyone. In addition, you need to spend a lot of time washing your hair. Thus, we can conclude that the purpose of Elseve lamellar care is the same as that of co-washing, but the L’Oréal Paris product is more economical, faster. Hair after its application does not lose volume. The product can be used regularly.

Is lamellar treatment suitable for colored hair?

This product is great for color-treated hair. In the process of dyeing, the hair is exposed to the aggressive action of the paint, as a result of which its lipid layer is disturbed and the scales can begin to peel off, the hair becomes less smooth and shiny, tangled and split. The use of lamellar care provides protection and quick care for hair at home, gives it shine, softness and smoothness.

Is it possible and necessary to use lamellar water after salon treatments?

Lamellar care is hair care with an immediate visual effect. After it, the hair becomes shiny, easy to comb both wet and dry. Fluffiness and tangles disappear, while the volume of the hair is preserved, since they are not weighed down at all. But it is rather a supportive remedy available at home. It does not have a cumulative effect, so, unlike long-term salon treatments, it only works until the next shampoo.

Does lamellar water have a thermal protection effect?

This agent does not have a thermal protective effect.

Lamellar water is recommended in cases where you face the following problems:

  • dull hair;

  • damaged, dry hair, including as a result of styling and coloring;

  • hair that is difficult to style;
