Expert advice: how to find a good doctor

To maintain health, it is important to get into the hands of a competent specialist on time. The host of the program “On the Most Important”, the author of the new book “Guide to the Use of Medicine” Alexander Myasnikov tells how to recognize a professional.

– Ideally, everyone should have at least one doctor, and preferably several, in which you are 100 percent sure. But finding a professional in our time is not an easy task. Do not rush to follow the doctor’s recommendations if you see him for the first time. Try to first understand whether you can entrust him with the most valuable thing you have – health.

Knows how to listen. At the initial examination, he should listen to you carefully, find the right words so that you immediately feel some relief. If after talking with a specialist you do not feel better, most likely this is a bad doctor.

Asks the necessary questions. A true professional knows how to get the patient to talk. My father, he was also a doctor, said: “Taking anamnesis from a patient is akin to a conversation between an investigator and a suspect.” Competently built collection of information, clearly posed questions, balanced analysis of answers allow the doctor to make the correct diagnosis in 90% of cases. And additional research is needed to confirm or deny the established diagnosis.

Not in a hurry to send for tests. If the doctor, having barely listened to your complaints, turns off, starts nodding, clearly thinking about something of his own, and is in a hurry to write you an appointment for tests or an ultrasound scan, this is a signal that you should not stay with this. A good doctor will not send you on often unnecessary examinations. After all, most of the “findings” on ultrasound, CT, MRI, X-ray are false positive, that is, they reveal some deviations, but how to interpret them and what to do with them is not clear. In addition, X-rays and CT scans have a very negative effect on the body and should only be done if absolutely necessary.

Tells the patient the truth. Especially if he doesn’t need treatment. After all, it is more profitable to prescribe medications, procedures and repeated admission. To tell the patient consciously: “You don’t need this research”, “You don’t need a medicine, but a change in your lifestyle” – this requires a lot of knowledge and responsibility.

Saves you money. A good doctor in both a free clinic and a private paid clinic is obliged to think about how to save your money. And if you paid him for an appointment at least once, he should be available by phone for the patient around the clock, so that if necessary you can call the attending physician and not be left alone with your problems. This is his medical duty!

… At temperatures below 38 ° C, together with a runny nose, cough, headache and body aches, he prescribes antibiotics. With a viral infection, as well as colds, acute respiratory infections, flu, such drugs are absolutely useless.

… She recommends immunostimulants or immunomodulators and talks for a long time about your impaired immunity. Almost all of them are a waste of money. The only and best immune stimulant is a healthy lifestyle.

… Prescribes to an elderly person with heart disease non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: voltaren, naproxen, indomethacin, etc., which can provoke a heart attack or hypertensive crisis.

… Prescribes medications for you with dubious effectiveness. These include many vascular drugs (cerebrolysin, glycine, mexidol, actovegin, etc.), hepatoprotectors (for cleansing the liver) and the already mentioned immunostimulants.

… Prescribes multivitamins to a pregnant woman, without warning that vitamin A in large doses is harmful and even dangerous for the fetus.

… In case of hypertension (increased blood pressure), he will offer you a course of intramuscular injections or droppers. We need a constant intake of drugs that lower blood pressure.

… If you complain of pain in the sternum when walking, he will advise valocordin (Corvalol), let you go on all four sides and tell you to come in a month. First of all, the doctor should send you for an EKG!

… He says that uterine fibroids, lipomas and polyps in the nose can degenerate into cancer.

… In case of uncomplicated herniated disc, he will offer a surgical operation and will insist on it.

… Diagnoses you have an increase in intracranial pressure and suggests treatment without prescribing an examination of the fundus.

… Talking about the dangers of vaccinations. One must run away from such a doctor right away. Some well-meaning doctors suggest getting a pre-vaccination test. But, in my opinion, it makes no sense to do this. Because there is still a 0,0000000000001% chance of getting a complication, and the examination will not save you. But there is no need to doubt vaccinations, they must be done! In addition to protecting you and your children personally, getting vaccinated is also your civic duty. From the point of view of bacteria, we are a “herd”. To interrupt the circulation of infectious diseases, any flock must be vaccinated at least 70%. We have significantly lowered this threshold, and now we are surprised by the outbreak of cancer. Oncology in 20% of cases is a consequence of infectious diseases! Vaccination can prevent many of them, such as cancer of the liver, stomach, larynx, and cervix. The risk of oncology in a person infected with tuberculosis is 4 times higher than in a healthy person.
