Tears of farewell to the World Expo 2015 were not forgotten, and already in April this year, Milan is again in the spotlight. Penza, perhaps, does not lag behind the world capital of design. At present, our hometown is moving with huge strides in a direction from design to decoration.
True professionals in their field not only surprise with the bold presentation of the most successful projects, but also share their experience with novice talents at meetings of the “Union of Designers”, with the work of which Woman’s Day has already introduced its readers. Today, together with the editors of Lake Como magazine, we invite you to plunge into the world of design art, but this time in an international format.
Exactly 20 years have passed since the decision was made to no longer hold the Milan Triennial. The International Exhibition of Architecture, Design, Applied Arts, Fashion and Handicrafts seemed to have no future. The decision was dictated by some fatigue and lack of fresh solutions after 63 years of remarkable history. The first triennials were held from 1923 to 1930 in the neighboring city of Monza, on the basis of the Institute of Industrial Design (a kind of Italian Bauhaus). The original purpose of the exhibition was to present the works of art university graduates to enterprises in a rich industrial area. Subsequently, the exhibition acquired an international format. Famous artists and architects took part in it: Giorgio de Chirico, Gio Ponti, Mario Sironi, Marino Marini, Le Corbusier. Designers that have become classics of series production, such as the Mies van der Rohe chair made of bent metal tubes, were exhibited. The international exhibition was moved to Milan in 1933, for which the architect Giovanni Muzio built the Palace of Art in the then fashionable style of rationalism. The exhibition became known as the triennial (i.e. three-year). In 2007, the first museum of Italian design was opened in the building of the triennial.
And now, finally, the moment has come when Design with a capital letter returns to Milan. With the support of the International Bureau of Exhibitions, as well as state and municipal structures, the 2016st triennial with the mysterious name “Design after Design” is being held in 21. What does this theme imply? The organizers of the exhibition talk about the fourth industrial revolution, or 4.0, about new technologies such as 3D printing, which provide incredible production opportunities for modern “artisans” anywhere in the world, about the relationship between design and the modern city, about globalization as opposed to historical traditions, and about the new frontiers of information technology.
The exhibition is dedicated to the search for the “keys” of the XXI century: the era of postmodernism has ended, it became necessary to give a name or at least a description to the new millennium, and the Milan Triennial makes its first attempt. 60 countries of the world will take part in the exhibition. In addition to traditional exhibition sites, museums, universities, galleries and theaters are actively involved. The event will go beyond the city boundaries, “capturing” the pavilions of the “Expo” and the historic Monza. The rich program includes an international competition among women architects, a world museum congress, symposia, concerts, performances and summer campuses. The exhibition started on April 2 and will run until September 12, 2016. Symbolically, the triennial will begin a week before the opening of the Milan International Furniture Show and will end with the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monza.
