Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh observed three groups of elderly people lose weight over four months under the supervision of trainers and nutritionists. Each group included those who were overweight and those diagnosed with obesity. One group was on a diet, the second did regular exercise (they were offered a choice of walking, cycling, or rowing three to five times a week), the third did both.
Those who got physical activity as a remedy for excess weight lost more weight than those who were on a diet. But the best results came from those who did both.
Physical activity even at this age changes the metabolism in the body, and helps to get rid of fat deposits, which cannot be achieved with diets alone.
The results of the study were published this September in the Journal of Practical Physiology (
