The labyrinth is a small part of the middle ear that is responsible for maintaining balance, as well as the sense of hearing itself. Sometimes it may be necessary to examine the labyrinth. It is usually performed on people who have a clear problem with maintaining balance. Dizziness is also an indication for the examination of the labyrinth. There are two types of examination – ENG and VNG examination.

Examination of the labyrinth – ENG

Test method ENG (electonystagmographic examination) accurately assesses organ of balance. When this test method is performed, nystagmus is assessed. It is the most common symptom in people who have imbalances. You need a referral to perform an ENG test.

It is usually issued to people who complain of dizziness, imbalance, nystagmus. Sometimes the abnormalities in the functioning of the labyrinth are affected by past injuries and diseases that are directly related to the hearing organ. Before using the ENG method, a neurological and otolaryngological consultation should be performed. Additionally, the patient should undergo a subjective hearing test.

It is also important to discontinue any medications that have been prescribed to relieve dizziness. The patient must be fasting during the examination. The test consists in irritating the labyrinth and checking the answers. The test also includes calibration and a position test. Examination of the labyrinth using the ENG method may cause nausea and vomiting. However, once the trial is over, they should disappear. ENG labyrinth examination is not reimbursed by the National Health Fund. If we want to make them, we have to pay for them ourselves. The price ranges from PLN 100 to PLN 160.

Examination of the labyrinth – VNG

Another method of examining the labyrinth is VNG (videonystagmographic examination). This is one of the most modern methods. Thanks to it, it is possible to diagnose vertigo of various origins. Different doctors can refer VNG. During the examination, the patient wears a mask. It includes goggles in which a special webcam is installed. It tracks the movements of the eyeballs. The doctor performing the examination sees the resulting graph on his monitor. It is thanks to him that it is possible to make a diagnosis. VNG examination also irritates the labyrinths, so with this method it is also possible to develop nausea and vomiting. Therefore, this type of labyrinth examination is also performed on an empty stomach.

This test cannot be performed if there is any inflammation in and around the ears. It should also be remembered that sedatives should be discontinued 10 days before the examination.

Examination of the labyrinth – how long does it take

You are probably wondering how long it takes to examine the labyrinth? Usually it is about 30/40 minutes. If you are considering performing a labyrinth examination, it is best to contact your doctor who will determine whether it is really necessary. Whenever disturbing symptoms occur, consult a doctor first.
