Your baby under the microscope!
5 incredible newborn skills
At birth, Baby has what are called “archaic reflexes”. Automatic walking, grasping, the Moro reflex, lateral tilt of the trunk… Survivors of an ancient time when survival was played out from the first minute of life…
>>> He knows (a little) how to walk on his own
When lifting the baby by the armpits and leaning him slightly forward, he straightens up then begins to walk. This archaic reflex lasts until around 3 months, a survival of the quadrupedal walk. It is the reflex of automatic operation.
>>> He can (almost) hold on to flee in case of danger
The pediatrician triggers the Moro reflex by subjecting the baby to stress. The newborn, arms outstretched, will then fully open his hands, then close both arms and both hands around his chest. A survival of the baby’s ability to cling to its mother in the event of a hasty departure. It’s the Moro reflex.
>>> It is able to cling to your fingers
Another gripping reflex, by which the newborn firmly grasps the finger that we place in the hand. It’s the grasping reflex.
From high to low !
Initially, the axis of the body (head and spine) is hypotonic. Its muscles develop gradually, in the same order as the nerves that control them: from the head to the shoulders, from the shoulders to the back to the hips, and from the hips to the legs.
>>> He can (almost) crawl
On your stomach, arms stretched back, the baby has the reflex to extend one arm sideways, then the other. If the doctor blocks his feet, he begins to move forward with his arms and legs, like a lizard. It’s the crawl reflex.
>>> He goes alone to his mother’s breast
Another archaic reflex, says “Burrowing”, which pushes him to move from birth to his mother’s breast to suck.
