Testicular self-examination and testicular cancer
Testicular cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in young men. About 800 cases of testicular cancer are diagnosed in Poland every year. Testicular cancer is highly curable, especially if detected early. In most cases, it is indicated by a tumor, thickenings, swelling of the testicles.
Successful cure and prognosis for life depend on early diagnosis. Therefore, self-examination of the testicles is very important. They are best done during or just after a warm shower or bath. The heat relaxes the scrotum, making the test easier.
If you notice any changes, see a urologist.
Testing of the testicles – Poles do it too rarely
Unfortunately, there is still a lot to do on this subject for Poles. According to the recently published National Health Test of Poles 2022 (over 230 adults took part in it), only one in five men performs a test of the testicles once a month or more. This is a decrease compared to the Test from 2021. Back then, such a test was performed by every fourth man.
16 percent (a decrease by 2 pp. compared to 2021) of men conduct them several times a year, and 6%. only once a year (an increase by 1 pp. compared to 2021).
As much as 46 percent. men never examine the testicles on their own. It is Fr. 5 pp. more than in 2021 and 1 pp. more than in 2020
How does it look broken down by age group? The younger the men, the less frequently they examine their testicles at least once a month.
Testing of the testicles is performed by every fourth man aged 45-54 and 55-64, and by almost every third man over 65. The testicles are least frequently controlled by men from the three youngest age groups, i.e. 18-44 years of age. Only one in five of them does it.
Testicular self-examination – how to do it?
The test of the testicles is most often mentioned in November. It is a month of solidarity with men struggling with prostate cancer and testicular cancer. At that time, Movember’s action was getting popular all over the world. However, it should be done all year round.
How should it be done properly? – Testing of the testicles consists in rolling the testicle between the thumb and forefinger from the upper pole to the lower pole. The test should preferably be performed under a shower or a warm bath, at least once a month. If any abnormalities are found, it is recommended to consult a doctor, said urologist Dr. Sebastian Piotrowicz from the European Health Center in Otwock.
Early diagnosis of neoplastic diseases may increase the chances of recovery. At Medonet Market you will find a male diagnostic test package.
How to do it is shown on TikTok by two doctors known for regularly expanding health awareness on social networking sites – Łukasz Durajski and Michał Domaszewski. And they talk about self-examination even once a week.
