Moderate drinking healthy? It’s a myth

Speaking of moderate alcohol consumption, the so-called a J curve that is expected to show that low alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

The so-called J-curve of the relationship between cardiovascular disease and alcohol consumption, suggesting the health benefits of low to moderate alcohol consumption, is the biggest myth since we were told smoking is good for us

– Cardiovascular physiologist Rudolph Schutte of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) reported, as quoted by sciencealert.com.

A huge survey among 350 Brits

A team of scientists from ARU and University College London have attempted to explain the above-mentioned problem of the J-curve. Researchers explain that many nondrinkers refrain from consuming alcohol because of current poor health. Therefore, a heart attack or other ailments are not caused by drinking, but by previous health problems.

Scientists analyzed data from the British Biobank, covering 333 thousand. 259 alcohol consumers and 21 thousand. 710 people who never drank it. The specialists took into account information from nearly seven years, noting when any of the study participants had a cardiovascular problem, heart disease, or cerebrovascular disease.

The team specifically excluded ex-drinkers to try to limit data from people who may have stopped drinking due to their current health condition.

Increased risk of going to hospital even with moderate alcohol consumption

To remove confusing factors, the research team compared those who drank the lightest to those who drank more. It was found that minimal wine consumption reduced the risk of coronary heart disease, but did not have a positive effect on other cardiovascular problems (as we know from other studies, even a small consumption of this alcohol may increase the risk of liver and pancreatic diseases and cancer).

For other alcoholic beverages, such as beer and spirits, even for people who consume less than 14 units per week, which is currently the recommended number of drinks in UK health guidelines (equivalent to five half-liter beers with 5% alcohol or 350ml of vodka) ), the result looks much worse.

Particularly among beer, cider and spirit drinkers, even those who consumed minimal amounts of alcohol had an increased risk of being hospitalized for a cardiovascular event involving the heart or blood vessels.
