History of origin

Many dog breeders of the 70th century tried to experiment with all sorts of hybrids. They crossed a variety of breeds among themselves in order to get original and unusual puppies, which they called “designer”. And, perhaps, the mestizos based on chow-chow turned out to be the cutest and most beautiful. They usually inherited the rich fur and good looks of their Tibetan ancestors, but their personalities were far less complex. These are the so-called chowskis, a cross between a husky and a chow-chow, whose puppies look like fluffy balls on thick soft paws, and many others. But the most successful experiment was an attempt to cross Tibetan “cubs” with their closest relatives – Spitz and Laika. The author of the idea is the German cynologist Julius Wipfel, who in the XNUMXs of the last century bred a completely new breed called the Eurasian or, as they were called at first, Wolf Chow.

The dogs turned out so beautiful that they quickly gained popularity all over the world, because they combined the luxurious appearance of the Chow Chow and the good temperament of northern dogs. The breed quickly won worldwide recognition, but in our country is still not numerous.

Breed description

A medium sized dog that looks like a fluffy wolf. The muzzle is of medium length, but not sharp, the lips and nose are always painted black, the eyes are small, slightly slanting, with an attentive and calm expression. The ears are triangular, erect, not very large. The overall build is powerful, even somewhat massive, but by no means loose. The back is straight, the legs are rather thick, proportional to the body. The tail is set high, twisted into a ring and thrown over the back, like all Spitz and Laika.

The coat is very beautiful, fluffy, of medium length, provided with a warm and dense undercoat. Such a fur coat perfectly protects the dog from both severe frosts and heat, so in no case should it be cut. A rich mane forms on the neck, feathering on the paws, and the tail even more so resembles a sultan and ostrich feathers.

Any colors are allowed, except for absolutely white and liver: red, gray (zonal, gray-tan), black, fawn and other clarified options. The muzzle often has a dark mask. But any stains are considered a defect.

Character

The Eurasian is an incredibly sociable dog. He loves his family and suffers greatly from loneliness. It can be called an ideal family dog: beautiful, exceptionally kind and compact in size. Often a dog can show the stubbornness inherited from the Chow Chow, but this does not mean that he does not understand what is required of him – it’s just that he decided to argue with you and fill his own worth.

Eurasiar will accompany you wherever you go, so you can safely take him with you both on vacation and just to the city – such a handsome man will be happy everywhere, and the dog will be happy because he accompanies his beloved owner.

He is benevolent towards children and takes part in all games with pleasure, especially if these games are mobile. The same applies to other pets. Eurasier can nurse with inspiration, for example, with a brood of kittens.

Care and maintenance

The ancestors of the Eurasian were dogs of the “primitive type”, that is, they belonged to the most ancient breeds that were not specially bred. They were just domesticated wolves long ago, which changed in the process of life side by side with humans and turned into huskies and spitz. That is, these dogs cannot be called sissies and city dwellers divorced from nature. They are not afraid of either heat or cold, their coat practically does not get wet, so they can sleep well, buried in a snowdrift, like their ancestors, the Samoyed.

But their luxurious fur coat should be looked after carefully so that it always has an attractive appearance. Dogs need to be brushed as often as possible (by the way, you can make yarn and knit exceptionally warm clothes from their wool), but you should not cut them – believe me, they do not suffer from heat, fur perfectly protects dogs from overheating.

And the second necessary condition is maximum contact with the owner and as many walks as possible.

Education and training

Eurasians are perfectly trained, but only on condition that you can become an authority for your handsome man. After all, on the one hand, their ancestors include Chow Chows with a closed character, and on the other, sled dogs that have been living according to the laws of the pack for many thousands of years. So you will have to endure the battle for leadership in this pack. Of course, due to his good-natured nature, the Eurasian will not show aggression, but he will definitely try to overdo it. So be patient and boldly start training. Behave confidently, calmly and in no case turn to violence – these dogs are very sensitive and can be seriously offended.

Do not forget about the socialization of your pet – from early childhood, introduce him to the outside world, let him communicate with other people and animals. Do not start parenting with the formation of distrust of others. Yes, the dog needs to be explained that you can’t take food from the hands of strangers, but you need to do this already when it knows for sure that these very other people are not enemies.

Health and disease

Despite the fact that the breed was bred relatively recently, Eurasians rarely get sick, because they have an exceptionally healthy gene pool. They do not suffer from any hereditary, breed-specific diseases. And among those diseases that do occur, one can note joint dysplasia, common in almost all dogs, diseases of the eyes, and the digestive system. Also, these sensitive beauties are very vulnerable and can become depressed due to lack of attention from the owner.

And, of course, like all dogs, Eurasians can catch infectious diseases or those that are carried by parasites, so do not neglect vaccination and prevention of ticks, fleas and helminth infections.

Word to the breeder

Maria Berzina from Narva, breeder of MARIBERRIES kennel: “The Eurasian breed is a wonderful companion. As a breeder, I strongly recommend this breed to families with children and other animals. He easily lives in an apartment or a private house, even an aviary (provided that he is in contact with the owner). Doesn’t require much grooming. I really want this breed to be noticed in Our Country and the Baltic states, but at the moment there are very few of these dogs.”

Ineta Chesnienė, breeder of the cattery “SPINDINČIOS AKYS” from Lithuania: “Eurasier is a companion dog, a dog for single people and for families with children, for those who lead an active lifestyle and love sports, and for those who prefer to be lazy on the couch; for those who want a dog with a beautiful coat, but with easy care for her; for those who have a house, and for those who live in an apartment. The Eurasian is good in every way, the main thing is that his man is next to him. The Eurasian has reduced aggression to a minimum, because of this, caution may be shown towards strangers, places and sounds. Therefore, socialization from childhood is very important – from 3-4 months to a year it is especially important that he sees as much as possible, communicates a lot with strangers, dogs, other animals, goes to strange noisy places a lot and, of course, like every a dog, a eurasier, needs love and at least minimal training. If you give him all this, you will get a dream dog.

We had and have a Pomeranian kennel, but we wanted a larger dog, beautiful and non-aggressive, friendly to other dogs. At one of the exhibitions, we saw a Eurasian and immediately fell in love, and when we learned that it was also a Spitz, we decided that this was what we were looking for. This is how the first officially registered cattery of Eurasians appeared not only in Lithuania and the whole Baltic region, but also in many countries around. Now Eurasians from our cattery and already their children live in Our Country.”
