The first picture of the talented theater director and playwright Ivan Vyrypaev is about the relationship between a man and a woman. Simple and at the same time complex, like air, life or death, the love story turns into a tragedy here. For with the feeling that overwhelms them, the heroes are not able to cope. It is akin to the euphoria of a blind man riding a motorcycle into the abyss. The picture, devoid of everyday and temporary details, is filled with allegories and symbols and resembles an ancient myth created by the phenomenally expressive means of modern cinema.
Psychologies: Is this a story of passion or is it love?
Ivan Vyrypaev: My film is about love. And so strong that the people to whom it is given cannot realize it. They are not really ready for it. And now this unconscious, great and spiritual feeling turns into something animal, takes wild forms. Love crushed heroes. The question is almost religious. I tried to imagine: well, God is given to man, so what? Is he ready for this meeting? Not sure. Don’t know.
But, perhaps, the heroes simply did not have time to sort themselves out.
It is not a matter of time: when a person does not take care of himself and is not ready to understand himself, where will this understanding come from? In fact, we are all wild people. Are we taking care of ourselves? Are we ready for real, divine love? I’m asking, not answering. The film is the question.
For you, love is first of all a serious spiritual work and only then a physical beginning?
This is work. So many people do not know what love is, and they are not to blame for this. But if love is given, then it needs to be worked on. It cannot grow like grass in a vegetable garden. It must be cultivated day by day, until death, otherwise it will perish.
The artists tell this story with restraint, without emotion, as if they are looking at their characters from the side…
The main thing is that the audience should have emotions. After all, the film does not take place on the screen, but inside us. And the task of the artist is not to revel in himself and his feelings, but to do everything so that the viewer experiences emotions. I would really like you not to dissect the picture with the thought “Something is wrong here!”, But to watch it with an open mind and trust your feelings.
