Ethmoidectomy

Ethmoiditis is one of the forms of sinusitis, namely, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the labyrinth of the ethmoid bone.

Ethmoidotomy is a technique by which ENT doctors (otorhinolaryngologists) correct the situation with the pathology of the ethmoid labyrinth in cases of acute or exacerbation of chronic forms of ethmoiditis, or with intracranial, ocular complications.

The safest method of ethmoidectomy is endoscopic surgery. Over time, this type of intervention made it possible to eliminate troubles as quickly and painlessly as possible.

And a modern form of technology can solve problems with minimal risk to patients.

Benefits, indications and contraindications of ethmoidectomy

The main advantages of performing ethmoidectomy for anomalies of the ethmoidal labyrinth are considered by experts to be the minimized risk of introducing an infection into the area that is being operated on, minimizing the likelihood of possible postoperative complications and a shorter recovery period.

Among the main indications for this operation is the presence of ethmoid sinusitis in acute or chronic form, which is not treatable by conservative methods.

It is contraindicated to carry out this kind of surgical intervention in the acute stages of infectious diseases, diseases with impaired blood clotting, oncological, as well as various disorders in the endocrine system, including diabetes mellitus. It is also not recommended to perform ethmoidotomy in cases of violation of metabolic processes in the body.

The process of endoscopic ethmoidectomy

As already mentioned, endoscopic intervention in ethmoidotomy significantly benefits in comparison with classical radical surgery. It is characterized by minimally invasiveness (that is, a low level of intervention in body processes), low trauma (tissues are not injured during surgery), a decrease in the likelihood of various complications, no risk of tissue infection, and an easy rehabilitation period.

At the preparatory stage during endoscopic ethmoidectomy, the doctor must fully examine the problem area.

In this case, the otorhinolaryngologist may prescribe a number of specific diagnostic procedures for the patient.

The procedure is performed using endotracheal anesthesia. A tube equipped with a fiber-optic optical device is inserted into the nasal cavity with a needle.

A specialist with the help of a microcamera can control the actions performed in the process. In this case, purulent secretions, various damaged tissues and other foreign substances that are in the operable area are removed.

The rehabilitation period does not last long, after the intervention, the patient must be under the supervision of a clinic doctor for several days in order to avoid complications. Here he undergoes conservative treatment, which improves the condition of the postoperative zone. After ethmoidectomy, some complications may occur, such as a large loss of blood or infection in the affected area. Injury to the internal structure of the operated zone is also sometimes encountered. However, the endoscopic technology of the intervention reduces the possibility of such complications to a minimum.
