Essential oils, or fragrances, are obtained from plants. There are several methods to obtain them, but usually it is done by distillation with the use of steam or cold pressing; sometimes they are obtained by extraction with alcohol. Each natural essential oil is a treasury of several dozen compounds. It contains, among others: esters, alcohols, ketones, as well as aldehydes and terpenes. It is also worth knowing that oils are soluble in fat and alcohol, and insoluble in water.

Properties of essential oils depend on which oil is chosen:

lavender oil It is characterized by sedative properties, it works well in eliminating such ailments as: muscular, rheumatic and menstrual pains;

eucalyptus oil has cleansing and disinfecting properties; it is mainly used in the preparation of inhalations for colds and flu;

tea tree oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties; helps in fighting acne and athlete’s foot;

lemon oil is distinguished by a tonic and bactericidal effect; It also stops free radicals, slows down the breakdown of collagen fibers and regulates the secretion of sebum.

Essential oils – application

There are many uses of essential oils. The most popular is for aromatherapy. Inhalations with oils are perfect for colds or for cleansing the sinuses. They are made using a diffuser. But fragrance therapy can also be performed by dripping drops of essential oil into an aromatherapy fireplace or into a container with warm water. You can also sprinkle it on a handkerchief or pillow.

Essential oils are also used topically – on the skin. Rubbing them in causes the ethereal particles to quickly enter the bloodstream through the pores. It is best to rub the auricles, hands, soles of the feet, and around the nape of the neck.

Oils can also be used to massage the whole body. But in such a case, it is worth using them with caution, as some oils have a very strong effect that can irritate the skin. Therefore, it is worth mixing it with the base oil, e.g. olive oil, before using a specific one.

Essential oils can also be used orally. You only need to buy a preparation that is intended for oral use. Usually you sprinkle them under your tongue or rinse your mouth with water mixed with a bit of a specific oil. You can also dilute it with your favorite drink and drink it.
