Espumisan is a drug that is commonly used for flatulence and to treat symptoms of gastro-intestinal disorders. The active ingredient in Espumisan is simethicone. The preparation is available in the form of capsules and oral drops. How to safely use Espumisan? Does it cause unwanted side effects?

Espumisan – characteristics

Espumisan is a drug containing the active substance – simethicone, which is a preparation used in gastro-intestinal ailments and as an aid in diagnostic tests. Simethicone is a pharmacologically and physiologically neutral substance. It works by destroying (rupturing) gas bubbles that are found in the digestive tract (food mass and mucus).

Espumisan is available in the form of capsules, granules in individual sachets, which are ready to be taken without the need to drink or drop.

However, it should be remembered that capsules and granules are recommended for children over 6 years of age, adolescents and adults. However, drops (40 mg / ml and 100 mg / ml of simethicone) for infants over one month of age, children, adolescents, and adults. Regardless of the form of Espumisan, it is available over the counter.

Espumisan – indications for use

Espumisan is a drug used to treat symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders related to the excessive accumulation of gases in the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. flatulence), as well as in:

  1. cases of increased gas formation in the postoperative period,
  2. preparing patients for radiological and ultrasound examinations of the abdominal cavity and gastroscopy.

Espumisan – dosage

The drug Espumisan, depending on the form of administration, has different dosages. Below are the exact dosing characteristics of Espumisan.

Espumisan (40 mg) capsules:

  1. children from 6 to 14 years of age – the recommended dose of 2 capsules, daily dose – 3 capsules 4 to 2 times a day,
  2. adults and adolescents over 14 years of age – the recommended dose is 2 capsules, daily dose – 3 capsules 4 to 2 times a day.

Espumisan (40 mg / ml) drops:

  1. infants over 1 month of age – 1 ml – 2 ml (25 – 50 drops), which corresponds to 40 – 80 mg of simethicone, daily in 2 (2 – 13 drops twice a day) to 25 (4 times a day for 4 – 6 drops) divided doses; total daily dose not more than 13 mg,
  2. children from 1 to 6 years of age – 1 ml (25 drops), corresponding to 40 mg of simethicone, 3 to 5 times a day,
  3. children from 6 to 14 years of age – 1 ml (25 drops) – 2 ml (50 drops or 1 dose from the dosing pump), which corresponds to 40 – 80 mg of simethicone, 3 to 5 times a day,
  4. adolescents and adults – 2 ml (50 drops or 1 dose from the dosing pump), corresponding to 80 mg of simethicone, 3 to 5 times a day.

Espumisan (100 mg / ml) drops:

  1. infants over 1 month of age – 5-10 drops should be added to the milk bottle or given on a small spoon before each breastfeeding,
  2. children from 1 to 6 years of age – 10 drops 3 to 5 times a day,
  3. children from 6 to 14 years of age – 10 to 20 drops 3 to 5 times a day,
  4. adolescents and adults – 20 drops 3 to 5 times a day.

Espumisan granules:

Adults and adolescents over 14 years of age should take the content of 1 sachet before or after a meal. If necessary, the contents of 1 sachet can also be taken before going to bed. If necessary, the dose can be increased by taking 2 sachets at a time. The daily dose should not exceed 8 sachets, corresponding to 1 mg of simethicone.

Children from 6 to 14 years of age should take the content of 1 sachet before or after a meal. If necessary, the contents of 1 sachet can also be taken before going to bed. The daily dose should not exceed 3 sachets, corresponding to 375 mg of simethicone.

Espumisan (140 mg) capsules:

Adults and children over 14 years of age – the recommended dose is 1 capsule – daily dose of 3-5 capsules (corresponding to 420-700 mg of simethicone). The daily dose should not exceed 5 capsules (corresponding to 700 mg of simethicone).

Regardless of the form of taking Espumisan, it should be taken with or after a meal. Taking too high a dose, as indicated in the Espomisan leaflet, does not pose a threat to health and life. Even high doses of the drug are well tolerated. The simethicone contained in Espumisan causes the foam in the digestive tract to disappear only physically. Simethicone is not absorbed by the body and is not chemically or biologically transformed as it passes through the intestines.

Espumisan – precautions

Remember that before taking any medicine, including Espumisan, you should consult your doctor and / or pharmacist. If you develop new and / or persistent abdominal discomfort, consult a physician to determine the cause of the discomfort and diagnose possible disease requiring treatment.

It is recommended that pregnant and breastfeeding women consult their doctor before taking Espumisan. However, due to the effects of simethicone and its lack of absorption from the gastrointestinal tract into the body, no harmful effects are expected from the use of Espumisan during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There are no clinical data on the use of Espumisan in pregnant women.
