Espresso martini is one of the most popular cocktails in the West in recent years, which has not yet managed to establish itself in Russia. It has a pleasant mild taste and invigorates well. Given the number of domestic coffee lovers, there is no doubt about the bright future of this cocktail in the post-Soviet space, especially since it is prepared on the basis of vodka. Fortress – 22-25%.
Historical information
The Espresso Martini recipe was invented in 1984 by the legendary bartender of the modern era, Dick Bradsell (deceased 2016), who worked at the time at the prestigious Fred’s Bar in London. According to legend, model Naomi Campbell once approached Bradsell and asked for a cocktail that would first wake her up and then pleasantly surprise her. The bartender immediately offered his new creation based on vodka with espresso. The star was pleased.
The Espresso Martini is codified by the International Bartenders Association (IBA) and is listed under New Era Drinks.
Interestingly, there is no martini or any other vermouth in the composition. The only thing that can justify the name is that the cocktail is traditionally served in martini glasses.
Composition and proportions:
- vodka – 50 ml;
- coffee liqueur (Kalua) – 10 ml;
- espresso coffee – 30 ml (one serving);
- sugar syrup (water and sugar in equal proportions) – to taste.
Vodka should be neutral – without aromatic additives. Attempts to replace real espresso with ordinary brewed and instant coffee will not succeed – the taste of the cocktail will be much worse. The more sugar syrup in the composition, the less notes of coffee are felt. Usually sugar syrup is added only to the dessert variation of the cocktail.
