Escitil – composition of the preparation, indications and contraindications to use

Escitil is a drug used to treat depression and episodes of so-called major depression and anxiety disorders.

The composition of the drug Escitil

Escitil contains an active substance called escitolpram, which acts on the central nervous system and has a positive effect on its functioning in the case of depression.

Indications for the use of Escitil

Escitil is used to treat depression and to treat anxiety disorders, for example panic attacks with agoraphobia or those unrelated to the fear of open spaces. Other indications for the use of Escitil are social phobia (fear of appearing and interacting with people related to being evaluated by them), generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Contraindications to the use of Escitil

Escitil should not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to the active substance or any of the excipients contained in the medicine.

Contraindications to taking Escitil are: diabetes mellitus, renal or hepatic dysfunction, manic states, heart disease and hemorrhagic diathesis.

Escitil should not be taken simultaneously with the use of other antidepressants and drugs used in the treatment of migraine. Treatment with Escitil should not be combined with the use of herbal medicines containing St. John’s wort.

Treatment with oral anticoagulants is also a contraindication to taking Escitil.

Before starting treatment with Escitil, inform your doctor about all medications you are taking at a given time, including those available without a prescription.

It is not recommended to use Escitil during pregnancy and breastfeeding. In such cases, treatment with this drug is possible only when it is absolutely necessary.

How is Escitil used?

The dosage of Escitil is determined by the physician on a case-by-case basis. The drug is usually taken with meals. Follow your doctor’s instructions closely and do not miss more doses, even if you feel better. Also, do not increase the dose of Escitil yourself. Each change of the dose taken requires consultation with a doctor.

Side effects of Escitil

The side effect of nausea may appear while taking Escitil – it happens quite often. Other side effects include stuffy nose, runny nose, increased or decreased (or even loss) of appetite, digestive problems such as diarrhea, constipation and vomiting. Psychological side effects such as anxiety, restlessness, insomnia or excessive sleepiness may also occur.

Possible side effects of Escitil include dizziness, excessive sweating, trembling hands, uncoordinated movements, joint and muscle pain, sexual dysfunction, especially in men, fever and weight gain.

Skin allergic reactions may also occur during the treatment with Escitil.

The most serious side effects of taking Escitil, fortunately occurring relatively rarely, include: fainting, visual disturbances, confusion, dysgeusia, nervousness, vaginal or nose bleeding, tachycardia, swelling in the legs and arms, and hair loss.

Precautions when taking Escitil

Escitil may adversely affect the ability to operate machinery and drive.

Escitil should not be used after the expiry date stated on the package. The preparation should be stored at room temperature, out of the reach of children.
