😉 Greetings to my dear readers! In the article “Ernst Hoffmann: biography, creativity, interesting facts” – about the life of the famous German romantic writer. Lived: 1776-1822. There is a video at the end of the article.
Many people, hearing the name of the famous German writer Ernst Theodor Hoffmann, will immediately recall Tchaikovsky’s wonderful ballet The Nutcracker. This Christmas tale has become Hoffmann’s trademark.
The great romantic, naturally gifted with many talents, wrote many more brilliant works. He was not only a wonderful writer, but also a composer and artist, as well as a renowned lawyer.
Ernst Hoffmann
Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann was born in Königsberg on January 24, 1776 in the family of a very successful lawyer Christoph Hoffmann and Louise (Dörfer). Their union was not strong, although by that time there were already three children in the family. In 1779 they parted.
After the divorce, the older children stayed with their father. Ernst and his mother went to the paternal house of Louise Albertina, where her brother Otto also lived. The Dörfer family was all lawyers, and Otto took over the upbringing of his nephew.
Fortunately, my uncle, being a rather famous lawyer, in his free time was fond of music of various genres and mystical teachings. It was fashionable at the time in high society in Germany.
From an early age, his uncle instilled in the boy that men in their family should continue the family tradition and be good lawyers. But his hobbies seriously influenced the later life of the teenager.
Perhaps thanks to this, an intelligent and observant boy with a vivid imagination, did well in all school subjects. By the age of 12, Ernst played many musical instruments and drew well.
Ernst, in love with the music of Amadeus Mozart, wants to be called Amadeus. He later changes his name to Ernst Theodor Amadeus.
According to family traditions, any talents, except in jurisprudence, could be good only for recreation and as a hobby. The main thing in life is a real business that brings a solid income. The young man, who rushed between his favorite music and drawing, nevertheless entered the law faculty of Konigsberg University.
Comprehending legal sciences, he manages to seriously engage in drawing, compose beautiful melodies and read a lot. On the bedside table, you could always find volumes of Stern, Rousseau and Shakespeare. He tries himself in literature.
About private life
He’s also in love with the pretty Dora the Hutt. She is nine years older than him and has been married for a long time. The novel lasted almost all the years of study, but after graduation, the family sent the young man to Glogau, where he had to pass another state exam.
It turned out that the uncle from Glogau has a daughter to be married, and his whole family cherishes the hope that he will like his cousin. Indeed, Ernst passed the betrothal ceremony, passed the exam, and was assigned to Berlin.
Two years later, Ernst, having passed another state exam, was appointed to a good position in Poznan. There he meets the charming Polish woman Michalina Tzczynska. A young lawyer, breaking off the engagement, makes a marriage proposal to Mikhalina.
This marriage will last over twenty years. Mikhalina forgives her beloved husband everything: an acute shortage of money, a rather difficult character and even a hobby for another.
Hoffmann went through many difficult moments. Lost his position. For some time he was without a livelihood, mourning the death of his two-year-old daughter.
After all the tests, Hoffmann was offered the position of theater conductor. And he completely surrenders to the music! This period of his life is one of the most brilliant and fruitful. He composes musical compositions for theatrical performances, gives lessons. In 1809, a short story “Cavalier Gluck” was published.
Hoffmann teaches music to the pretty 13-year-old Julia Mark, who has a wonderful voice. Hoffmann is 33 years old, and he clearly understands that he is in love again. This feeling will last for over four years.
Hoffmann is tormented by suffering, he drinks a lot of wine and writes in his diary about his feelings. Suicidal thoughts come. And this is the end of everything. Julia marries a wealthy merchant, and Hoffmann leaves the city.
Ernst Hoffmann was paralyzed in the spring of 1822. Died on June 25 at the age of 46. Buried in Berlin at the Jerusalem cemetery.
Hoffmann’s works have always had many admirers. His work was highly appreciated by the most famous classics of world literature.
