History of occurrence

Invented by psychiatrist Milton Erickson. As a 17-year-old boy, he became seriously ill with polio. It was 1918, the vaccine against it had not yet been invented. And the population of the whole world suffered from outbreaks of epidemics that claimed countless lives. Milton overheard the mother talking to the doctor, who gave no chance that her child would survive.

This so outraged the guy that he promised himself to get out at all costs. Completely paralyzed and bedridden, Milton literally achieves unthinkable results in just a year — he moves with the help of crutches. A little later, he goes on an independent four-month canoe trip on the lakes of Madison.

He proved by his example that the possibilities of a person are unlimited, it is only important to expand one’s consciousness. Indeed, in fact, at that moment he was so weak that he was not even able to push the canoe into the water. And lasted 4 months, eating caught fish and fruits collected along the coast.

The first important step is tuning. Therefore, without it, the desired result will not be achieved. Whatever you say to the interlocutor, he will not properly perceive your words, even if they are the most correct and accurate. This is the base, the foundation on which your further communication will be built. So, you can adjust based on:

  • representative system. It is important to determine the leader, and then with the help of it try to influence the interlocutor, using in speech the words that are closest to him. It can be visual, kinesthetic (feelings), auditory and digital (mixed). That is, if a person is a visual, address him with the words “look”, “clearly visible”, “everything is somehow foggy”, and so on.
  • Poses, gestures. Copying the position of another person allows you not only to adapt to him, but also to understand what is happening to him, what he feels. By changing your posture to his, you will experience changes in your emotional sphere and if you are attentive, you will be able to recognize and decipher his condition. After that, unobtrusively, so that in no case will he notice your actions, otherwise he will consider them an imitation and your adjustment will stop there, you should try to change something in the pose. See if he repeats after you. If so, consider that the first stage has been successfully completed. For example, if you see that a friend is sitting in a closed position, repeat it, and then change to an open one. Then you will notice how it will become easier for him, because he will unconsciously copy you.

When you master this method, you will improve your skills over time, easily changing the pace of breathing and facial expressions. You will even unconsciously learn to blink your eyes in time with the blinking of another. If someone is anxious and breathing too fast, do the same by slowing down each inhalation and exhalation. It is only important to avoid adjusting with people who have breathing problems due to various diseases, as you will damage your health.

If you managed to establish rapport, that is, to adapt to, say, a client, proceed to a gradual change in his state to a more resourceful one. This was discussed in the examples above. Try to control this process to the maximum, joining only partially. Because if you decide to calm a person who is angry and try to feel the full power of this feeling, you only risk harming both him and yourself.

And if you cause anger in yourself far below his level, then you will help him gradually return to normal. Be sensitive and attentive, timely changing the style of behavior and manner of speaking, if necessary. To better recognize non-verbal expressions, study them and practice them daily. Then it will not be difficult for you to determine the state of the interlocutor literally in a matter of seconds.

Usually this word causes fear and apprehension in people who have not encountered Ericksonian hypnosis. But in fact, each of us experiences it on a daily basis. Remember, have you ever thought about something, ceasing to notice reality? Like passing out for 10 seconds? Consider that you yourself and unconsciously entered a trance state.

Basic techniques:

  • The Three Yes Technique. Its essence is to prevent the opponent from answering you “no”. Therefore, proposals are initially formed, which he will confirm in any case, even if they do not particularly relate to the topic of conversation. It is important for you to get three “yes” from him in a row, after which you can ask for something, he is unlikely to refuse. Since you will take him by surprise, after so many agreements it is difficult to take and ruin everything.
  • Chatting. Gypsy’s favorite way. It is necessary to jump from one topic to another, talk a lot, without giving the interlocutor the opportunity to understand what is happening at all. His consciousness will take a timeout, but it is difficult to withstand the inexhaustible flow of information that cannot be understood and processed. When you notice that you have confused him, then close the speech with the necessary suggestion. So you can even ask for a favor.

Suggestion

  • Truism. This is an affirmative proposition that cannot be questioned. So to speak, the truth. At the very least, if you have managed to get the adjustment and put you in a trance, then your truism will be perceived that way. For example, aimed at combating addiction “smoking is harmful to health”, or motivating to study “who tirelessly studies and develops will definitely become a worthy person”, etc.
  • Oppositions. This technique involves the opposition of two behavioral responses. For example, you can say: “The more difficult it is for you to study now, the easier it will be to work later,” or “The more difficult the problem seems, the easier it will be to solve it later.”
  • Choice without choice. When you leave no chance to refuse. You simply provide options for the development of events. Do not ask your husband if he can take out the garbage, but you are interested in whether he will take it out in the morning, or when he returns from work.

Instructions

  1. Sit comfortably, taking care in advance that no one can interfere with you. Find some object to which you treat with indifference and concentrate on it.
  2. Mentally say what you see in front of you, hear and feel. At the moment, not sometime there. Three statements for each representational system will suffice.
  3. Repeat the previous paragraph, only use two statements, then one.
  4. Think about which of your hands is lighter? Having determined, close your eyes and say: “My left (right) hand is getting lighter every second. So much so that she involuntarily rises and approaches my face. At this point, I fall into a deep trance.»
  5. Now it’s time to say the pre-prepared affirmations. They can be focused on luck, health, wealth, love, self-esteem and so on. The main thing is not to harm, but only to help change life for the better. They must be composed in the present tense and without the “not” particle, since our brain subconsciously ignores it. And this means that you will program yourself for failure or illness. To enhance the effect, also use alpha rendering.
  6. Now it’s time to get back to reality. Take a deep breath and say the prepared phrase to exit hypnosis. Stay in place for a while, listening to the sensations. It is worth avoiding haste, in this matter it will not help you.

Believe in yourself, and then no obstacles will stop you. Milton was able to prove to us by his example that a person is capable of doing the impossible, if he really wants to. Surprisingly, he contracted polio again, although such cases are quite rare. The disease struck him at the age of 51. But not for long. Just a year later, he went to conquer the mountains of Arizona.

Not every healthy person can handle such a load, and Erickson succeeded, despite the paralyzed right side of the body. Almost until his death, he worked and made a significant contribution to the development of psychotherapy. The strength of his spirit can be envied. And, of course, lead by example.
