Most men experience erection problems from time to time. Some men have erectile dysfunction. Then it becomes difficult to get or maintain an erection. What are the causes of erectile dysfunction and when to start testosterone treatment?

Erectile dysfunction

Erection is the ability to get and then keep your penis stiff enough to start and continue intercourse. During an erection, the cavernous bodies in the penis fill with blood (with the help of special mechanisms responsible for the inflow and outflow of blood), causing an erection – i.e. an erection.

The Polish Society of Sexual Medicine (PTMS) announced that about 1,5 million Poles suffer from erectile dysfunction. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, is also related to erection. After the age of 50, men’s testosterone levels slowly decline and erectile dysfunction is becoming more common. However, treatment with testosterone does not necessarily help with ED.

Treatment with testosterone does not improve erection in men with normal testosterone levels. And research shows that it doesn’t always help even men with low testosterone levels.

Erection – reasons for the lack of an erection

Lack of erection is usually caused by low blood flow to the penis or a problem with the nerves that control erection. This is the result of other conditions such as hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol or diabetes. These conditions constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the penis or damage the erectile nerves.

Low testosterone levels can affect sex drive but does not usually cause erectile dysfunction.

Testosterone treatment is associated with many risks, including:

  1. treatment with testosterone may cause the body to retain too much water,
  2. it can also cause acne, enlarged prostate and breasts (gynecomastia).

Other side effects of hormone testosterone treatment include:

  1. lower fertility,
  2. increase in red blood cells which can lead to heart disease
  3. increase in sleep apnea symptoms,
  4. higher risk of prostate cancer.

Erection – when to treat with testosterone?

Symptoms or signs of low testosterone levels can include decreased sex drive, loss of body hair, enlargement of the mammary glands, the need to shave less, a decrease in muscle size and strength, and easier bone breakage. In some cases, the testicles may shrink.

Your doctor may order a blood test to measure your testosterone levels. The blood test should be done more than once. This is best done in the morning when your testosterone levels are at their highest.

If the tests show low testosterone levels, the doctor should look for possible causes. For example, low levels can be caused by a problem with the pituitary gland.

Talk to your doctor online and receive an e-Referral for your testosterone levels to be tested. You can also discuss your blood test results during an e-visit.

The causes of erectile dysfunction

Failure to get an erection can be an early warning sign of a more serious condition, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Treating this condition can improve your overall health and erection.

The medications you are taking may be another cause. No erection It can be a side effect of many medications, including medications for high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, heartburn, allergies, pain, seizures, and cancer. If the cause is medication, your doctor may change the dose or switch to a different medication.

important

Make lifestyle changes. Unhealthy habits can affect erectile dysfunction. Regular exercise, weight loss, quitting smoking and reducing alcohol can help.

Drugs to aid erection

Some medications increase blood flow to the penis if taken one hour before sexual activity. They should not be taken if you are taking nitrate medications, such as nitroglycerin pills for heart problems. The combination may cause your blood pressure to drop suddenly.

Usually erectile dysfunction have a physical cause that can be treated. But depression, performance anxiety, and relationship problems can cause erectile dysfunction or make things worse. Counseling alone with a specialist, e.g. a urologist, andrologist, or with a partner at a sexologist, may be helpful. Unfortunately, only about 40% of men decide to see a specialist, which, according to the data, can help after even 2 or 3 visits.
