Erdomed – composition and action of the drug

Erdomed is a mucolytic drug, i.e. it liquefies and reduces the viscosity of the mucus in the respiratory tract. The active substance of this preparation is erdosteina.

Erdosteine is a derivative of the methionine amino acid. It is a secretolytic drug from the group of mucolytics. This drug is used in situations of excessive production and accumulation of sticky mucus in the airways.

In a healthy organism, secretions protect the respiratory tract by preventing the mucosa from drying out and by enabling the cilia of the respiratory epithelium to function. However, in disease, when there is excessive production of secretions, the movement of the cilia is impaired. As a result of impaired functioning of the cilia, the secretion becomes too thick and sticky, and it begins to linger in the respiratory tract. It is only possible to choke it if it is thinned and liquefied.

Erdostein liquefies the secretion in the respiratory tract by changing its composition. This drug may reduce the content and structure of mucoproteins in the secretion of the respiratory tract, reduce its surface tension, and also cause its enzymatic degradation.

Erdosteine consists of two blocked sulfhydryl groups. These groups are released during metabolism in the liver. The resulting metabolites break down mucus glycoproteins into smaller molecules, thereby liquefying the secretion, reducing its viscosity and improving its transport outside the human body. Thanks to these processes, mucus production is increased, the patient can cough up the mucus more easily, and the function of the respiratory epithelium improves. Erdostein in therapeutic doses does not have a significant effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa.

Erdosteine also acts as an antioxidant by neutralizing free radicals. This substance increases the concentration of amoxicillin in bronchial secretions.

The action of erdostein it additionally strengthens the proper hydration of the patient, as well as the treatment with kinesitherapy, i.e. patting and proper positioning of the patient.

Erdomed – interactions with other drugs

Before taking Erdomed, tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal remedies you are taking.

The studies and analyzes performed so far have not shown any interaction of Erdomed with other drugs that are used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections.

However, combination therapy with antitussive drugs may cause a patient to build up a large amount of bronchial secretions. This state of affairs may lead to a deterioration of the patient’s condition, e.g. due to a deterioration of the respiratory efficiency. To avoid complications, you should not take antitussive and secretolytic drugs at the same time, especially at bedtime.

It is also worth remembering that the parallel use of Erdomed and amoxicillin increases the concentration of amoxicillin in the respiratory tract.
