Epipen – indications
Epipen is a drug that comes in the form of an injection. In what situations should the drug be used? Especially in the case of sudden and severe allergic reactions caused by a food allergen, insect bite or bite. Epipen can be used in the event of an anaphylactic shock.
The dosage of the drug, as well as its frequency, should be determined by the doctor. Please also read the information in the package leaflet. Epipen must be administered intramuscularly. The drug should be injected with them. in the anterolateral part of the thigh. For young children, Epipen must only be used in case of a life-threatening situation. If there is a need to reduce the dose of the drug, for example due to the child’s age, the administration of a different preparation containing epinephrine should be considered. In a situation where the symptoms of the allergic reaction do not improve after the first administration of the drug, the next dose should be injected after a quarter of an hour. To increase the effect of the drug, you can massage the injection site.
Epipen accelerates the heart rate, minimizes and eliminates swelling, increases blood pressure, relaxes the smooth muscles of the respiratory tract.
Epipen – side effects
Please inform your doctor if you are allergic to epinephrine. Other contraindications for taking the drug include hypertension, diabetes, arterial hypertension, hyperthyroidism, and heart muscle disorders. You should also inform your doctor if you are taking antidepressants, insulin, diuretics, quinidine or diabetes medications. It is also necessary to inform a specialist if the patient is a pregnant woman or a woman who is breastfeeding.
Epipen, like any other drug, may cause side effects:
- weakness
- heart problems
- increase in blood pressure
- nausea
- sweating
- headache and dizziness
- nausea and vomiting
Peripheral ischemia can occur when Epipen is improperly injected into the foot or hand, for example. If there is a risk of life threatening, Epipen should be injected without consulting a doctor. The drug should not be applied to the buttock muscles.
