He will soon be followed by a peak in hospitalization and deaths. – Pessimistic scenarios regarding the course of the pandemic, unfortunately, have come true. The Delta variant coronavirus is taking its toll, the situation is dramatic, says cardiologist, lipidologist, epidemiologist of heart and vascular diseases Prof. Maciej Banach from the Medical University of Łódź. He warned that a wave of hospitalizations and deaths could come around Christmas.

According to the scientist, pessimistic, statistical predictions about the course of the pandemic and the high number of COVID-19 cases, unfortunately, have come true. – The pessimistic predictions about the Delta variant, which dominates among coronavirus infections in Poland, have also been confirmed – emphasized Prof. Banach.
– The Delta variant takes its toll, the situation is dramatic – he assessed. – The situation in Poland is probably the worst in the world at present. Only in December we already have 4,2 thousand. deaths of people, ninety percent of which were not vaccinated – noted the epidemiologist of heart and vascular diseases.

Banach recalled that almost all experts, including the Medical Council of the Prime Minister, argue that the restrictions introduced are far from sufficient, moreover, “those regarding certificates of vaccination for COVID-19, for example in restaurants, simply do not function and they are not implemented because they have no legal basis, ”he said.

– After all, I observe that the staff of any shop, restaurant or theater has no way to check whether someone has actually been vaccinated or not. No owner or administrator of such facilities knows how to enforce the prohibitions, when the client does not submit to the inspection, will not show a covid certificate – he emphasized. – Lack of such recommendations when issuing restrictions, with such a number of infections and illnesses is surprising, on the other hand, such recommendations are really very much expected by everyone – emphasized the doctor.
The restrictions will have no effect
– After almost two years of experience, we can expect that the dominant wave of hospitalizations and – unfortunately – deaths will come two weeks after the peak, which may be around Christmas. Hospital blockades and even more deaths can then be expected. Let it not happen, but you have to take it into account – warned the professor. – That is why the actions of the rulers must be even more restrictive. Primarily for unvaccinated people, he pointed out.
“ I don’t like being a bad prophet, but the current restrictions will have no effect in fighting the fourth wave of the pandemic if there are no proper regulations, ” Banach said, arguing that there is now a big problem again in treating diseases other than COVID-19. – In fact, everything is standing, there is a huge occupancy in hospitals, there is a shortage of staff. Despite our best efforts and persuasion, it is also hardly surprising that people are afraid of hospitalization or even tests, despite the relative safety outside covid wards. Although this, unfortunately, will cause us to have more cases of late diagnosed or poorly treated diseases unrelated to COVID-19 – the scientist warned.

– If we do not deal with COVID-19, we will again have a serious situation related to heart and vascular diseases, cancer, and chronic diseases – he pointed out. – Lack of good education, lack of standardization of procedures, lack of clear recommendations – all this means that, unfortunately, we are in the place we are – assessed the professor. “However, it is hoped that any decision that is made now will have a preventive effect,” he added.
– I have the impression that in Poland, when it comes to vaccinations, it is a form of justification for the lack of other restrictions. If we consider the vaccine to be the most important element in the fight against the pandemic, let us all, without exception, encourage it even more, not just those who are about to take the third dose. And not only in statements, but also in well-prepared educational campaigns – appealed the doctor.
– Many people who do not vaccinate are not so-called anti-vaccines, they are people who are afraid for various reasons – he assessed. – Many people, in turn, simply lack common sense, so clear decisions are needed, even decisions on radical restrictions – summed up prof. Banach.
