English cuisine

Conan Doyle’s fascinating works about Sherlock Holmes involuntarily made us associate the oldest English cuisine with traditional black tea and oatmeal. But in fact, it is not limited to these two dishes, but covers dozens of others. These include puddings, steaks, biscuits, escalope, fish and meat dishes.

The national cuisine of Great Britain is not considered exquisite, but is called excellent, satisfying and healthy. The process of its formation began as early as 3700 BC. Very little is known about the products that were popular at the time. Scientists name only bread made from a mixture of grains, oats and wheat. However, with the conquest of England by the Romans, which dates back to 43, everything changed. The conquerors, famous for their feasts, diversified the national British cuisine with fruits and vegetables, among which were asparagus, apples, zucchini, onions, celery, turnips, etc. And also brought some wine, spices and meat dishes to it.

Meanwhile, in the Middle Ages, which began at the end of the XNUMXth century, the main ingredients were bread, fish, eggs, dairy dishes and meat. Although the latter could not be eaten during the fast.

In 1497, the British Empire appeared on the world map, with colonies on all inhabited continents. Their culinary preferences began to have a direct impact on the formation of English cuisine.
