Energy-saving lamps: harm and benefit. Video

Energy saving lamps replaced conventional lamps at the beginning of the 21st century. The reason for their appearance was the need for the rational use of energy resources in connection with the increase in the share of their consumption per capita. But for all the benefits of such lamps for the world economy, one serious question arises: how do they affect human health?

The principle of operation of energy-saving lamps

If we talk about energy-saving lamps in scientific language, then they are nothing more than complex fluorescent lamps. To better understand the scheme of their work, it is necessary to understand the structure of these lamps. So, they consist of a flask filled with argon and a small amount of mercury vapor, and an electronic ballast. A phosphor is applied to the inner surface of the flask. When exposed to ultraviolet rays, the phosphor emits visible light.

When an energy-saving light bulb is connected to the network, the following processes occur in the bulb: under the influence of electromagnetic radiation, mercury vapor creates ultraviolet radiation, which, passing through the phosphor, causes it to glow in the visible range of the light spectrum. The efficiency of an energy-saving lamp is quite high, its luminous efficiency is about five times that of a traditional incandescent lamp. But this is not all of their obvious advantages: energy-saving lamps last about 5-10 times longer than traditional incandescent lamps.

Thus, a 20 W energy-saving lamp emits a luminous flux equivalent to that of a conventional 100 W incandescent lamp. This ratio saves up to 80% energy.

How can an energy saving lamp affect human health? According to the research results of the Moscow Center for Electromagnetic Safety, it was revealed that energy-saving lamps, regardless of their power, are sources of electromagnetic radio frequency radiation.

Such electromagnetic fields will not cause specific diseases, but can provoke various diseases, including the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, and negatively affect immunity. In addition, exacerbations of chronic diseases can occur due to unsafe exposure to electromagnetic fields.

There are a number of other negative aspects in the operation of energy-saving lamps:

– Many fluorescent lamps flicker during operation. This has a detrimental effect on the brain, leading to increased fatigue. That is why doctors recommend abandoning the use of energy-saving lamps in children’s rooms. – Another significant drawback of energy-saving lamps is their ultraviolet radiation. When exposed to the skin for a long time, it causes the destruction of elastin and collagen, increases the likelihood of the growth of cancer cells. – Energy-saving lamps disrupt the functions of a person’s internal clock, which leads to sleep disturbances and various body dysfunctions, such as depression.

How to protect yourself from negative influences? Try to buy only high-quality certified products, use protective shades and use such lamps as little as possible

Despite all of the above hazardous health effects of energy-saving lamps, they continue to be actively used by millions of people around the world.
