Endoprostheses cheaper than amputation in the treatment of bone cancer

In the opinion of Polish oncology orthopedists, with the current state of knowledge and technical capabilities, there is practically a chance for complete elimination of treatment through limb amputation.

As he says Prof. Jacek Kaczmarczyk, Head of the Department and Clinic of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Medical University of Poznań: “Epidemiological studies show that every year around 150 people develop primary bone tumors requiring treatment with oncological endoprostheses throughout the country. This means a cost of about PLN 25-30 million per year. These amounts are not frightening, and their proper allocation in the system will make it easier for hundreds of patients to access modern treatment, giving many children and adults hope for a normal life. It should also be mentioned that the crippling treatment of limb amputations is not a cheap treatment. Each time it requires prosthetic limb defects. A limb prosthesis is also a cost of several or several dozen thousand zlotys. Additionally, taking into account the social aspect (visible disability, the effect of social exclusion, adaptation, the cost of architectural barriers, wheelchairs), it turns out that proper oncological treatment is not that expensive. “

Innovative aspects and options for treating bone cancer will be the main topic of the first debate in Poland with the participation of Polish and German oncology orthopedists, which will take place on June 19, 2013 at 17.00 pm at the Poznań City Hall.

Participation in the meeting has already been confirmed by:

Prof. Kaczmarczyk adds: “The aim of the debate is to join forces, and above all to exchange knowledge and experiences of Polish and German specialists. We want to make you aware that there is a possibility of reorganizing oncological treatment in orthopedics. However, treatment should be concentrated in centers that have the full possibility of comprehensive treatment (surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging). There should also be a special pool of funds for the purchase of oncological prostheses (not necessarily by increasing the global pool of funds, but by better allocating them). “

The debate will end with the signing of a Polish-German declaration on scientific cooperation and an exchange of staff between the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Medical University of Poznań and the largest clinical hospital in this part of Europe – the Charite Clinic in Berlin.
