Women suffering from endometriosis are more likely to suffer from first-trimester miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and intra-pregnancy complications, Scottish scientists said during the annual European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) meeting, which takes place on June 14-17 in Lisbon.
Researchers from the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary analyzed data on over 14,6 thousand. women, 5375 of whom had been diagnosed with endometriosis. The information was collected between 1981 and 2010. After taking into account the age of women and previous pregnancies, scientists found that in patients with endometriosis the risk of early miscarriage was 76%. higher, and the risk of ectopic pregnancy is three times higher than in women without the condition. An increased risk of preterm labor and postpartum hemorrhage has also been observed.
Endometriosis is a fairly common disease, but it is difficult to diagnose. The uterine mucosa (endometrium) is then located outside its cavity, i.e. in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and intestines.
This disease is associated with increased inflammation in the reproductive organs, which affects the implantation and development of the embryo, as well as a greater risk of complications. Women who have been diagnosed with endometriosis should be aware of this risk and appear more often at follow-up visits to the doctor, says the author of the study, Dr. Lucky Saraswat.
