Chronic stress takes a toll on both mental and physical health. Constant tension has become a habitual background of our life for a long time. What “recipes” do our compatriots use to get rid of it?
More than a third of Russians (34% of women and 35% of men1) believe that the surest way to combat anxiety is to communicate with friends or relatives.
Chocolate, cakes, sweets and other sweets are the best anti-stress products for 27% of women and 23% of men, mostly between the ages of 21 and 40.
And 25% of women and 18% of men resort to medicines, more often over the age of 75 years.
Not surprisingly, communication with others was at the top of this list. It really cheers up, next to like-minded people, we feel that we belong to something big and stable. This helps to relieve stress and get additional support when we are especially “stormy”.
In addition, in communication with others, it is easier for us to “digest” unpleasant events and experiences, to see new ways to overcome problems and new meanings. We need both recognition and support, and relatives and friends can give them to us.
With the second place in the list of anti-stress products, everything is also clear: sweets and chocolate contribute to the production of the hormone of happiness serotonin, increase the level of endorphins. In addition, sweets are carbohydrates, which means they quickly increase the energy level in the body. This alone can lift your spirits.
Naturally, with age, cravings for sweets noticeably decrease. In women, this is associated with menopause – the less estrogen is released, the less often you want sweets. In addition, over the years, many develop diseases in which it is necessary to limit the amount of sweets and chocolate.
The third place is also quite understandable, it is only important to recall that you cannot self-medicate. Medications that are designed to reduce stress levels should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor.
In fairness, we note that in fourth place in the list of stress management among our fellow citizens was spending time with pets (19%). And on the fifth – yes, alas, alcohol. With its help, 15% of respondents are trying to relieve stress. However, alcohol is a fairly strong depressant, and momentary relaxation can turn into a worsening condition, increased anxiety, depression and addiction.
It seems that in the coming weekend, for the prevention of stress, it is worth buying a cake and inviting the most beloved people to visit. And don’t forget to pet the cat!
