Emollients are specialist hypoallergenic dermocosmetics intended for the care of particularly demanding skin. Find out more about the composition and effects of emollients.

Emollients – what is worth knowing about them?

Emollients are found in many cosmetics such as: body oils, creams, shower gels, body lotions and lotions. Thanks to emollients, the TEWL coefficient is reduced, thanks to which the loss of water through the epidermis is smaller, which prevents it from drying out and makes it properly moisturized. Products containing emollients create a protective film on the skin surface.

The use of emollients gives a good result quickly. The skin becomes smooth and healthier as the substances accelerate the regeneration process – incl. for this reason, emollients are often used in the care of children and babies. They are also perfect for the care of atopic, allergic and delicate skin – thanks to them, the skin is also protected against external factors.

Emollients – destiny

Emollients can be used by both children and adults – this type of cosmetics is intended for all people with dry skin prone to irritation. They are especially helpful for people with atopic and extremely dry skin, as they deeply moisturize and lubricate the skin. Emollients are characterized by a gentle action, so they are good for the care of a child’s skin, which is more delicate than for an adult.

Emollients should only be used in certain situations – not every child and adult needs this type of care. It is worth reaching for emollients when skin changes appear frequently and indicate atopic dermatitis. Prophylactic use of dermocosmetics is optional, but only in children at risk of skin lesions.

Emollients are not ordinary moisturizing cosmetics. For this reason, they should not be used by people with normal skin. Otherwise, the pores may become blocked, because paraffin is one of the ingredients of this type of cosmetics, which makes it difficult for the skin to breathe and often contributes to the formation of skin changes.

Emollients – ingredients

The emollients include, among others occlusive ingredients that protect the epidermis and keep it properly hydrated; humecants, i.e. components that bind and retain water, thanks to which the stratum corneum may contain more of it and be more elastic. Apart from them, the emollient contains ingredients such as menthol, collagen, lidocaine and vitamins.

Important components of emollients are also liquid paraffin (contained in skin care cosmetics), glycerin (used in emollients for children), lanolin and natural vegetable oils, which, thanks to the content of, among others, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory and nutritional properties.

Emollients in cosmetics

Emollients in cosmetics are, among others in soaps (bar and liquid), gels, washing oils, shampoos and hair conditioners. They are usually hypoallergenic cosmetics, free from irritants, i.e. parabens, alcohol, artificial dyes and fragrances. On the other hand, they are enriched with ingredients reducing irritation, such as: panthenol, allantoin, aloe juice, herbal extracts and urea, but only in some products.
