If the doctor has doubts about the functioning of the muscular system and the peripheral nervous system – he or she orders an EMG (electromyography) test. This is an important step in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as myasthenia gravis and spinal muscular atrophy.
EMG test – does it hurt?
Two types of this test are performed – surface electromyography and needle electromyography. The surface method is completely painless and non-invasive. The case is a bit different when it comes to needle electromyography. The test is preceded by washing with soap and water of the test body part. Before the examination, you must not use ointments or creams. Consultations are required when taking any medications, as they may affect not only the course of the examination, but also the result itself. The method consists in inserting needle electrodes into the muscle. Most often, respondents indicate this moment as the most unpleasant. After insertion of the electrodes, muscle activity is monitored. Records from the study allow you to accurately assess the condition of the muscles.
EMG examination – how long does it take
The test usually takes around 40 minutes. The test allows the detection of even minor pathologies within the muscles. The faster it is detected, the more likely it is to heal or stop the progression of changes. EMG examination plays a very important role in establishing a rehabilitation program after various injuries and operations. Thanks to it, you can determine the number of treatments and specific exercises. This will greatly accelerate the effects.
Keep in mind that EMG research must not be performed in pregnant women. The examination is not performed on a patient who has a pacemaker, as well as implanted metal elements in the area of the diseased area. Despite the fact that the method is not the most pleasant – it is worth noting that it is safe.

There is a possibility of execution EMG research na NHF. Typically, a referral is made by a neurologist who suspects something wrong. If you decide to pay for the test yourself, you must take into account that it has individual tests for which you will have to pay separately. The cost of the tetany test is about PLN 100, while the myasthenia test – PLN 120. You will pay the least for electroneurography. Usually it is associated with the cost of several dozen zlotys. The decision about which to try is always made by the doctor. Only a doctor is able to assess the changes detected during EMG research.
