Emerald gooseberry is a delicious and unpretentious variety. Its bright green berries can not only be used for jam, but can also be eaten fresh, which distinguishes it from similar cold-resistant varieties.

Description of the emerald gooseberry variety

This bright green gooseberry is nothing more than the Ural Emerald variety, a culture bred specifically for the cold winters of Western Siberia. Its feature is high winter hardiness. This gooseberry can withstand temperatures down to -37 ° C. In addition, he is almost not susceptible to fungal diseases.

Emerald gooseberry has a large harvest

Bushes “Emerald” tolerate drought well and give a large harvest. From one bush, you can get up to 6 kg of berries. The berries of this variety are emerald green, elongated. The weight of one fruit can reach 7,5 g. This is an early maturing variety and self-fertile, that is, it does not need pollinating neighbors. However, in order to achieve the maximum yield, it is advisable to plant next to the Beryl or Commander hybrids.

The variety also has disadvantages – dense thickets of young shoots and an abundance of sharp thorns.

How to plant an emerald gooseberry?

It is not difficult to grow this variety. You need to plant it in the fall, choosing a sunny area protected from the wind. For a shrub, a low occurrence of groundwater is important; it will not survive root flooding.

The landing procedure is as follows:

  1. Dig a hole 50 × 70 cm.
  2. Make it drainage from branches and expanded clay.
  3. Mix the soil with rotted manure or compost by adding 1 liter of wood ash.
  4. Plant the seedling in the hole, spread the roots, and cover with soil.
  5. Spill water over the planting and mulch with hay or sawdust.

The root collar should go 5-7 cm underground. This will enable the bush to form adventitious roots.

To get a harvest of emerald gooseberries, as in the photo, requires simple maintenance. Seedlings need to be watered 2-3 times a week, then gently loosen the soil. When young bushes take root, watering should be reduced. If the layer of mulch around the bush reaches 9 cm, it will need to be watered only a few times over the summer:

  • in May – during flowering;
  • in July – when the fruits ripen;
  • in August.

There are 4-6 buckets of water under one bush. At the same moment, you need to feed the plant with humus or mullein, as well as wood ash.

In the fall, it is supposed to feed the bush with superphosphate and potassium sulfate – 15 and 20 g / m2, respectively. In the spring, 15 g / m2 of urea must be added. Bush pruning should be carried out in the 2nd year. The height of the bush must be shortened to 40 cm, cutting off the branches by 1/3 of the length.

The high-yielding variety “Uralsky Emerald” is well suited for areas with a cool climate. Its main advantage is the exquisite taste of berries.
