Emanera is a prescription medicine to stop the production of acid in your stomach. It is intended for adult patients and children over 12 years of age.

Emanera – action

Emanera works because of the active substance. Esomeprazole belongs to the group of proton pump inhibitors – it blocks K + / H + ATPase in the parietal cells of the stomach, contributing to the reduction of hydrochloric acid secretion. This translates to a decrease in gastric acidity.

Emanera – purpose and dosage

Emanera is a medicine that can be used in the case of:

  1. gastro-oesophageal reflux disease – in the treatment of erosions in the course of reflux oesophagitis, in the prevention of relapse, in symptomatic treatment,
  2. Helicobacter pylori eradication – as a combination treatment with antibiotics,
  3. stomach ulcers associated with taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  4. treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome,
  5. prolonged treatment to prevent recurrence of bleeding from peptic ulcers.

Dosage

Take the drug as prescribed by your doctor. Unless otherwise instructed by a specialist, you can use the following dosage.

a) Adults and adolescents after 12 years of age

  1. In the treatment of erosions in the course of reflux oesophagitis: 40 mg once a day for 1-4 weeks.
  2. In the symptomatic treatment of reflux disease: 20 mg once a day for 1 weeks.
  3. For the prevention of relapse of reflux oesophagitis: 20 mg once a day.

b) Adults

  1. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication: 20 mg twice a day for 2 days.
  2. Treatment of gastric ulcers associated with the use of NSAIDs: 20 mg once a day.
  3. Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: starting dose is 40 mg twice daily, the maintenance dose is 2-80 mg daily.
  4. Long-term treatment to prevent recurrent bleeding from peptic ulcers: 40 mg once a day for 1 weeks.

Emanera – contraindications to use

Emanera must not be used in the case of:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation;
  2. hypersensitivity to other drugs containing benzimidazole derivatives;
  3. breastfeeding;
  4. taking an antiviral drug containing atazanavir at the same time.

Emanera – warnings

Warnings for the use of Emanera:

  1. do not exceed the recommended dose,
  2. Before starting treatment, the cancerous nature of the disease should be ruled out – the drug may mask the symptoms of gastric cancer,
  3. in the case of long-term treatment (over 12 months), it should take place under the supervision of a physician,
  4. the use of the drug may be associated with a greater risk of gastrointestinal infections by bacteria: Salmonella, Campylobacter,
  5. people with hereditary absorption of certain sugars should not use the drug.

Emanera – drug interactions

Due to the active substance, Emanera may reduce or intensify the effect of other drugs with a pH dependent absorption.

Included in the drug esomeprezol:

  1. reduces the absorption of: ketonocazole, posaconazole, itraconazole,
  2. increases the concentration of: vafrarin and other drugs from the coumarin group, cilostazol, diazepam, phenytoin, citalopram, imipramine, clomipramine, voriconazole.

Drugs that inhibit 2C19 (e.g. fluvoxamine) or 3A4 (e.g. voriconazole, ketoconazole) may increase blood levels of esomeprazole.

Emanera – side effects

Emanera, like any other medication, can have some side effects.

– Often or not very often the following occur: headache, dizziness, insomnia, paraesthesia, nausea, constipation, flatulence, balance disorder.

– Rarely or very rarely, there are: haematological disturbances, blood sodium decreased, confusion, agitation, dysgeusia, aggression, depression, erythema multiforme.
