Elosone – indications, dosage, side effects

Elosone is a topical preparation with anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties containing a corticosteroid. Mometasone is an active ingredient that reduces swelling and irritation. The drug is in the form of a cream and is available on prescription in pharmacies.

Elosone indications for use

Elosone is a preparation containing a strong corticosteroid, it is indicated:

  1. for the relief of itching and inflammatory symptoms in corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD).

Elosone and contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Elosone are:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. Do not use Elosone: in acne vulgaris or rosacea, in dermatitis around the mouth, in atrophic skin lesions, in bacterial infections (e.g. impetigo, pyoderma), viral infections (e.g. herpes, shingles, chicken pox, common warts), parasitic infections and fungal infections (e.g. caused by dermatophytes or yeasts), in the case of post-vaccination reactions, in skin tuberculosis, in syphilitic skin lesions, in itching of the anus and genitals, in diaper dermatitis, on the skin under the diaper, as the diaper may act as occlusive dressing,
  3. do not use in children up to the age of 2.

Dosage of ointments

The duration of the treatment with Elosone will be determined by your doctor. Usually, treatment should continue until the lesion is resolved. If there is no clear improvement after 14 days of using the preparation, the doctor will verify the diagnosis and may recommend a change in the dosage / treatment method.

  1. A thin layer of Elosone should be applied to the affected areas of the skin once a day.

Elosone – warnings

  1. Elosone is for external use only.
  2. Do not use the drug on the eyelids or near the eyes (glaucoma may occur).
  3. Avoid using the preparation on a large surface of the skin, long-term use, use under an occlusive dressing and use on damaged skin or on the skin of the face.
  4. If irritation or allergy occurs while using Elosone ointment, discontinue treatment and consult a physician.
  5. Caution should be exercised in patients with psoriasis due to the risk of developing tolerance and relapse, the risk of generalized pustular psoriasis and general toxic effects due to the disruption of the skin.
  6. Children are at increased risk of systemic side effects of corticosteroids due to a higher surface area to weight ratio than adults.
  7. The use of Elosone in children requires caution.

Elosone and other substances

Your doctor’s advice about taking:

  1. oral corticosteroids
  2. anticoagulants (malfunction),
  3. antidiabetic drugs (reduction of blood sugar lowering effect),
  4. cardiac glycosides (intensification of their action),
  5. diuretics that reduce the amount of potassium in the blood (possible worsening of hypokalaemia).

Elosone – side effects

During the use of Elosone, the following may occur: burning / prickling / tingling sensation at the application site, folliculitis, acne, contact dermatitis, sensory disorders, skin atrophy, pigmentation changes, stretch marks, irritation, hirsutism, dermatitis around the mouth, skin maceration, widening of small subcutaneous vessels visible as the so-called spider veins, heat rash, allergic reactions.
