ELLE Decoration editors from 23 countries selected twelve prize-winners who received awards for the best design objects of the past year.

Designer of the year

Designer of the year

We noticed a long time ago that the designer Arik Levy and speaks brightly, and works with fire (as evidenced by his kitchen design, colored with tongues of flame). Last year, he surpassed himself with a whole fireworks display of extraordinary objects. Wire table and Level shelf for Zanotta, Layer chair for Viccarbe, crystal collection for Baccarat – this is not the whole list … Congratulations to the winner!

Lamp

Marcel Wanders we love for a long time – for a sense of humor, wild imagination and the ability to balance on the verge of shocking and kitsch. Among the objects of his company with the modest name of Moooi (“Well, oh, very beautiful”) furniture in the form of pets and a “burnt” chandelier, as if miraculously saved from a fire. Take a look at another Wanders hit – a chandelier Khu Vuon Tren May for Flos… Severe minimalism on the outside, rocaille tenderness on the inside … The object is as outstanding as its author!

Crockery

Reinventing the cymbal is more difficult than reinventing the bicycle. But a Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa coped with it brilliantly. Kit Vertigo (“Dizziness”) for B&B Italy has nothing to do with the usual dinner service. The number of items is odd, the shape is incorrect, the material is unexpected! Seven bowls, plates, or dishes are made of Corian, an ultra-modern material based on acrylic resins. At the same time, in terms of beauty and convenience, innovative dishes are in no way inferior to traditional ones. Dizzying success!

Bedroom

Attention! Don’t oversleep the bed market sensation! Model Princedeveloped by Carlo Colombo for Flou, shows what design thought is capable of, armed with the latest technology. The bed together with the headboard is a monolithic volume, molded from solid polyurethane. Instead of legs – a tubular stainless steel base. Evokes aesthetically flawless dreams and withstands the fiercest pillow fights!

Seat

Everything should be beautiful in furniture – the frame, the upholstery, and even the shadow it casts on the floor! Sofa Skindeveloped by Jean Nouvel for Molteniis surprisingly close to ideal. It is equally pleasing to the eye and to the touch. From a distance, the sofa seems to be just a piece of leather, thrown with a spectacular carelessness on a metal base. Close up, it pleases the eye with an unusual treatment of the surface and the play of light penetrating through the holes in the upholstery. Simple, how everything is ingenious!

Decorative fabrics

We speak Marimekko – we mean “Fabrics with large prints”… It would seem that over the past half century, the legendary Finnish brand has managed, creatively rethinking, to put into business ornaments of all times and peoples. It was not so, the designer proved Harry Koskinen… In the collection of cotton fabrics Frequency he skillfully used African motifs, torn out of the “ethnic” context and filtered to the point of pure abstraction. The refined pattern is equally impressive in black and white and in bolder color combinations such as anthracite and olive.

Furniture

Looking at the table Xavier Lasta, I do not want to indulge in arguments about convenience, strength, reliability, etc. Let’s forget about base matters! S-TABLE from MDF Italia just struck us with his beauty. Take a look at his S-shaped polyurethane “leg” – no abstract sculpture! At last year’s Milan Salon, the designer presented the object in two versions: with a tempered glass top and a fiberboard. We like the first one more – you can admire the shape from all sides.

Sanitary engineering

Bath Pear, design Patricia Urquiola for Agape, not adapted to shyly huddle against the wall. The place of this plumbing masterpiece is in the center of the room! By the way, the exquisite streamlined shape is not its only advantage. The bath is made of a special synthetic material – exmar (a mixture of resin and quartz powder), warm and delicate to the touch and perfectly retaining heat. The water in it does not cool down for hours, allowing you to enjoy water treatments and great design almost indefinitely.

Flooring

Their union was a foregone conclusion. Spanish company nanimarquina has long advocated return to natureand the Danish designer Tord Bontier made a name for himself, mercilessly exploiting natural motives (only the lazy did not copy his delicate floral patterns). A carpet with a poetic name “Small field of flowers”, invented by the Danish for Nanimarquina, has already won first place in the 2007 Red Dot Award design competition. The carpet consists of several thousand leaves cut from felt and hand-sewn onto a base. It is extremely pleasant to walk on them barefoot. To enhance the effect, we recommend singing loudly a song from the “Bremen Town Musicians”: “Our carpet is a flower meadow” … and further in the text!

Wall covering

We have never seen anything like this! Ceramic tile Sohodesigned by the factory Marazzi, resembles a puzzle, the elements of which have different shapes and, most importantly, different thicknesses. Thanks to this coating, the flat wall becomes embossed as if by magic. The tile is available in four colors: possible options and combinations – mass. This is a real breakthrough! The company’s designers turned all our ideas about the usual material upside down. Tile is no longer a “second skin” for the walls – it becomes a dress that you need to be able to wear!

Discovery of the Year

“We have a road for young people everywhere!” For the time being, this slogan is applicable to Russian design with a big stretch, but the Dutch could shout it out at the top of their voice. A door to the world of great design to a recent student Joris Laarman opened his thesis project – an amazing radiator Heatwave… Last year, Jaga launched the facility into series production. By designing the Nebula chandelier for Flos, Joris proved that his success with the heater was no accident. Keep it up!

Kitchen

Which storage system for the kitchen is better – open or closed? Jean Nouvel found an original compromise! His kitchen Quran New Lights for Ernestomeda it is arranged according to the principle of a shadow theater: translucent doors made of frosted glass plus illumination of the cabinets from the inside. The effect is mesmerizing – even if not all kitchen utensils stored in the cupboards are high-design masterpieces. Agree, Nouvel deserves another award!
